Who would you buy? (Part 2)

Each bar is him compared to all other strikers displayed as a percentile.

So for example he is 97th percentile among qualified strikers for expected assists, 83rd for expected goals etc.

I can’t decide what stats are shown in the radar, it’s automatic and these aren’t the categories I would choose to be honest.

An assist machine plus very high on non-penalty goals. Is that pure number or is it somehow weighed given the Eredivisie isn’t one of the top three leagues (PL, La Liga, Bundesliga)

Not weighted

I think with Sweeting’s pie charts, the more that’s filled in, the better. So, if you open your fridge and find a pie which is largely intact, that’s good news, but if you find one that’s been mostly eaten, that’s disappointing.

That’s my interpretation anyway. Probably wrong, but there you go.

Is there a way to capture the evolution of a player. Per year in the same team or subsequent teams. Am curious whether player evolve or flourish into the eaten, half eaten or uneaten pies….

I definitely eat more pies than I did in my 30s

I’m able to go back one year. In Saibari’s case this doesn’t make a comparison very easy because last season he was being used as an 8 so the categories the pie looks at are different and he is being compared to midfielders not strikers of course.

Thank-you, first and foremost. These sorts of plots are super useful and helps to visualise what one is buying into.

It speaks to what I’m trying to understand. How much of these sorts of presentations capture a moment in time vs what an individual can bring to another system - all the while knowing that by default, the receiving team and the system they play will have to accommodate/learn how to maximise any particular aspect of the spider plot.

Salah, Firmino and Mane are interesting case studies. They had significant periods at a number of clubs and the trajectory of how he went from one point to the next may be informative - nothing the data peeps probably haven’t already poured over endlessly… Will it always come down to a gut feel and hope that the variables align?..

Yeah, great work Sweeting. We might joke around about pies etc, but your efforts are much appreciated :+1:t4:

Apparently he’s already set for Bayern. They’ve been tracking him for some time and have consistently been in touch with his people.

All the more reason to go for him

Let’s nip in there and sign Saibari to go with Diomande. Along with young Rio that would represent three stellar options on the wing, augmented by Wirtz (depending on how he is deployed) and possibly Szobo and Frimpong.

Bayern Munich will be furious, and they can retaliate by signing Gakpo.

I can see the logic in bringing Nunez in. I wouldn’t be wild about it but in terms of adding depth to the frontline then getting in a free transfer who can cover CF or LW is beneficial.

I’m probably leaning towards supporting the move, if we do make it. We have more than enough spaces in the squad for registration reasons to just have him there.

I don’t see any logic in it.

I have no idea why there are even “rumours”, probably nothing serious anyway. Takes little for imagination, nostalgia (over what exactly though?) or what ifs to magnify it. Does he miss being here and would like to return? I bet he does. Though I felt he also wanted to leave when he did.

Being on the periphery of things even in bloody Saudi, flerting with Turkey (like the great Osimhen) or to a less big side back in the best leagues… that’s his level now. Perhaps a big club goes for him where he would be more of a backup. Again, not what we need because we have unanswered questions with the group we have.

Iraola = chaos = let’s bring Nunez back… yeah, no. It doesn’t work like that. No, Iraola isn’t all chaos and no, Nunez is not a quality pressing player. We have organizing to do in order to return to a serious level in all phases of the game, especially in off the ball ones. It’s also very much connected to what we do with the ball.

Running at everything that moves like a wet chicken is not what we need. No, he doesn’t have all the tools to be great. We’ve been there, 3 seasons at Liverpool was more than enough and we don’t have to go there again. Let other clubs do it.

Big simple swerve, no need to think twice.

Would Nunez cope with the tactical demands Iraola places on his forwards?

Probably not. I’m not convinced we are looking at him at all but if we are it would just be to essentially be a warm body to fill out the forward positions. I wouldn’t envision him becoming important.

We just don’t have enough players and, even though I’m sure we have lots of money available, in a market where even average PL players are going for £60m+ we probably can’t address all the squad’s weaknesses in a single window.

Nunez on a free at least gives us someone to eat minutes at the end of a game and let our actually important players rest.

But we’ll have to see if interest is even real. I’m not a huge advocat for a move but like I said I do see a logic to it. There is no one better than you can get for free.

Nunez would also have to be happy with being a squad option and not one of the first names on the team sheet. I don’t think he’d have been happy with that when he was here before but maybe his attitude has changed now.

What’s even crazier than the idea of Nunez coming back to us are the rumours linking him with Barcelona and Chelsea!

Well
If he’s good enough for Barca? Sign him…

Has anyone watched Nunez this season, how is he performing in an easier league with less pressure?
