Who would you buy? (Part 2)

We need two wingers, a midfielder, a central defender and a fullback.

Five signings.

Nunez? If we are a bit short up front, given Ekitike is out and Isak isn’t the most robust, I could make a case for Nunez if he is a cheap back up option. If he is free and the wages are reasonable, there’s a lot to like on those terms.

Nunez as an expensive main man fell short. The framing is completely different if we are looking at Nunez as a cheap back up option.

I mentioned him last week

He´s a good player but the one doubt I have is whether he is quick enough to play out wide in the Premier League or CL top level.

He´s not what I would call quick

Main man or squad option, you still need him to stay onside and put the ball in the net more than he did.

They won’t make a decision based on emotion and I doubt the data says he’s our best possible option even at some discounted rate.

Wasn’t there a time when he was actually playing on the left as a winger/forward and played better than being the main striker?
Perhaps he could have more of that role for a season on loan and mean we don’t have to buy two expensive wingers

With his touch, passing and technique, would you think that would be a good option though?

From what I know of Saibari, he’s predominantly a central attacking midfield player who can even be a false #9, given his productivity and size. Not really something we’ll be looking at, I don’t think. If we’re adding something in attack, it is some new genuine wide threat. I don’t see us getting involved against Bayern for Saibari, what would be a big profile transfer. While we’re also yet to discover the balance with Szoboszlai and Wirtz (not to mention also Ekitike and Isak down the line).

I want clarity this summer, not more adding to the pile without knowing what we’ll do with it.

Definitely. You do not make the decision based on emotion. Completely agree with that. You make the decision based on data, and player attributes, and the cost/benefit.

If we spend our budget on the positions we might prioritize (I named five areas) but still thought we were short through the middle up front, Nunez might come into focus then.

If there is a better free option, bring it on. Or if we think Wright can make the step up, bring it on. Or if one of the two wingers we sign (we haven’t done it yet, so this is hypothetical) can play through the middle with aplomb, bring it on.

Just trying to see how Nunez might be a possible goer as a back up on a free.

I took a lot of bullets defending Darwin from what I felt was unreasonable criticism on here (some of which was far more personal and egregious than the line we were told was being crossed regarding Slot), but even I stopped in the second half of his last season here. Not because i finally lost faith, but because he seemed to give up and so got notably worse. The descriptions of him as a high energy, non-stop runner just is not who he turned into. And that would be the concern about bringing him back is that the positive descriptions being used about his style of play is not who he became.

Nunez? I thought he made sense as a left winger when we had Firmino, as the role was more about making runs in behind and being a goal threat.

I don’t know exactly how Iraola wants his wingers to play, but from what I’ve seen.. I’m not sure Nunez fits that.

I’d have him an option up front though, while we’re waiting for Ekitike to come back. I’m very much in favour of some type of short term solution, as it’s primarily a short term problem.

Not specifically about Nunez, but..what I don’t want to see is that usual line coming from the club about only entering the market for “the right player” or thinking Gakpo can cover it by himself. In this case I think it’s more about getting A player who can help save Isak’s legs while Ekitike is recovering. We can’t just have Gakpo and a couple of kids for that.

That’s probably where 80% of my pro Nunez stance comes from. This club have a way of leaving themselves shorthanded going into a season, and I just can’t be bothered with that once again. Get a guy. Some guy.

Then spend the money on wingers and other positions where longer term solutions make more sense.

Nah. We’ve been through this before. I can’t go through another ‘FFS Darwin!’ season.

We could maybe afford to have him in the title winning side provided Jota, Diaz, Trent, Salah were still with us. The squad has lost a LOT. So, adding him now seems like we could use those wages better elsewhere.

Just want to put it here that hopefully Iraola would give Abe some playing time on the right this coming season. He is young yes but if Arsenal can give Dowman playing time I don’t see why not Abe unless someone here who knows youth players, is Dowman that much more developed than Abe?

Can you wash your hands with soap after typing that

He is fairly solid and I imagine very cheap now they go down.

Lewandowski?

Well Nunez would at a minimium harrass defences, create openings for others and create chances… maybe not first choice but as a backup and against weaker teams…

I just don’t think they do the short term solution thing. Yes he’d be on a free but wages are going to be over £100k plus and probably a minimum 3 year contract if you want any chance of some resale value in a year or two. Then comes the question of what to do when Ekitike is fit again.

I kind of get the appeal but I don’t think it’d even be on the clubs radar as an option.
