Maybe Slot wants to keep the powder dry until he gets to know the players he has at his disposal first?
And/or the player(s) that people at our club want is still playing at Euros?
If they learned something from our past mistakes, it’s that they can’t still still and rely on injury prone players. I fully expect them to sign a centre back unless a miracle happens and Van Den Berg decides to stay and convinces Slot he can be a quality option at that position.
Yeah, I know. I was just messing about. We are a very prudent club, unlike others we could name, which is, on the whole, a good thing. It can be frustrating at times, especially when everyone knows where we need to strengthen, but rather that than splurging money all over the place on players we don’t need.
I’m actually interested to see whether Slot can ignite/revive the careers of our young players. He talks the talk but it has to go both ways, i.e. if he remains true to his word, I expect them to respond. He won’t be buying squad players - if the club strengthen, it will be someone who’s intended for first eleven, while the youngsters’ path to first team will remain open.
I know I shouldn’t expect the likes of Carvalho and Van Den Berg to make epic turnarounds in form and commitment, nor the likes of Doak, Clark and Danns to become world class over night but… That feeling’s stronger than reason.
Zubimendi and Kudus. Both experiences but still young. Perfect match with typical Edward’s target. Kudus has 85m release clause. Its overpriced but I do think we need PL experience to upgrade our frontline.
Anyone have some informations about Johan Bakayoko?
Two years left on his contract. So might be open to a move.
I assume we will probably do stuff out of the blue. Edwards was actually quite good at that.
Still don’t expect we will sign many players
Also it might be worth adding that it was a mainly Klopp approach by sorting stuff early. Not seen what Slot usually does.
In a ‘normal’ year Slot might like to sort things out early too, but the circumstances right now are against that.
The two obvious things are all the changes at LFC - Edwards, Hughes, Slot, others too. They all need to come in and get to work. While I’m sure work conversations happened, somewhat, before the official start day, it obviously wasn’t firing on all cylinders yet.
International tourneys. The Euros and the COPA mean many players are away, and all coming back at staggered intervals. This will hinder all manner of things, from contract negotiations, to player recruitment, and player sales.
The main early business we’ve seen is from PSR clubs who seem to have found a way to circumvent trouble, by arranging deals for several fringe players at what appears to be prices that are way over the odds. Surely the Premier League will hit them on that, as it is against any sense of fair play within the rules.
It’s hard to know what business we will do with so many question marks that need answers.
The poll above nails the three priority positions we need to recruit for - central defence, right wing and defensive midfield - but we don’t fully know how Slot sees his squad, and what plans he has for these areas.
I expect August to be busy across the market, as has already been said.
Nico is already making 169,000 pounds per week at Bilbao. They re-upped his contract with the intention of keeping him. Anyone who wants to lure him away needs to pay more than what he’s getting. Nico showed against England that he is a top quality player and that comes with a high price tag.
Different situations, of course, but for whatever it’s worth, Feyenoord were generally late to the window in Slot’s seasons. Rarely completed anything before mid to late July/August.
Very different situations. Slot said it himself, Feyenoord are mostly a selling club, Liverpool are part of the top of the football food chain.
It’s just a combination of a new coach, new directors, lots of new people, the squad being in a good place and not needing much, Euro’s, Copa’s, etc.
I’m first looking forward to the first friendly games, then we’ll see what we do in the window in and out.
I think and hope that plenty of work has been going on behind the scenes, even before the season ended. I don’t imagine Slot will have a lot to do with transfers in these early stages. Guehi seems to be linked with us for a while, and obvs had a good euros, unfortunately his price would have shot up but if he’s our man I’m happy with that. We were linked with Olmo as well a while back and hoping there’s some truth in that! (As a RW for us) Tricky sell tho asking any top player to come in and compete with Salah. No idea for DM, be happy for a us to take a risk on a lesser known player to add to the mix we already have.
I do believe our squad is better than last season and much better than the season before. Quansah, Bradley, and Elliott have grown up and proven their quality, not promising youngsters anymore. Szoboszlai, Endo, and Gravenberch are getting used to the Premier League. Sepp is a top 5 young center-back in the Bundesliga; he is a decent addition. We do not lack quantity and don’t have a clear weakness. We had many comebacks last year thanks to squad depth, capable of changing the entire front line without dropping too much in quality. Though we need an upgrade for sure to challenge for the title, it is not an easy task with what we have right now.
This is true with the development of some of the players the squad is in a good place.
Just needs a couple of additions.
We know exactly what additions, presuming no one unexpectedly leaves.
CB, DM, RW.
Does Slot play with a DM?
We do need a right sided attacker
You think he’s going to play three CBs? In that case we’ll need two CBs, or players who can do both.
We can’t go into another season with Mo as our only RW option.
I’d add a LB there too. Tsimikas hasn’t been a reliable enough backup to Robbo and at this point in Robbo’s career , we should be looking for a guy who can compete with him within 1 season for his starting spot.
