Sure, but since then, women’s football has gained mass appeal, if one judges by all the articles about it on bbc.com.
I wouldn’t use that as a means to gauge the popularity of women’s football. I have absolutely no doubt that there is an “inclusion” policy within the BBC whereby a minimum percentage of their stories must relate to the women’s game.
Was being cheeky.
I’m in the states, woke up and just got to work, and two games are over already…timing of these for me is not great. All the games are in the middle of the night…I’m going to record some of them and watch them with my daughter after the fact I think, so I’ll try not to see the scores. Might be tough.
There is your first problem
The World Cup started today. Hosts Australia and New Zealand kicked-off their campaigns with wins over Norway and Ireland respectively.

BBC
some of the ladies in our squad are easy on the eyes, too
Switzerland vs. Philippines: 2-0
Nigeria vs. Canada: 0-0
Spain vs. Costa Rica: 3-0
I really should start recording some of these. England vs Haiti are on at 10:30 tomorrow (11:30 CEST) so at least that’s one I should get to see.
Japan are currently beating Zambia 2-0 but I can’t find the match anywhere on terrestrial TV.
Of course, I mean not on TV in Japan. Will the England game be live in the UK?
Are you in the UK? It may be on BBC red button
No, I’m in Japan.
It’s on ITV
I’ve given this game 20 minutes, switching to Saturday Kitchen on BBC.
England penalty saved.
Frankly one of the most blatent handballs - I think the question of whether there was contact.
Edit retake because keeper moved. 1:0.
England just lack patience, trying too hard to win it back but not using a press to do it so they’re just committing foul after foul.
Incredibly, 9 minutes stoppages added to the end of the first half. This was similar at the men’s WC.
I also noticed a stat for ball recovery time which is telling.
The new experiment with VAR seems completely pointless.
It was advertised as an attempt to increase communication with the fans over the deliberation, but that isnt what is happening. All the happens is that once the ref has made their mind up they say so and say something that is entirely obvious from the actions (“after VAR review the decision has been overturned and it will be a penalty”).
USA vs. Vietnam: 3-0
Japan vs. Zambia: 5-0
England vs. Haiti: 1-0
Denmark vs. China: 1-0
Watched US game, was not ready for ref to talk after penalty awarded lol, i was surprised and a bit shocked. I would much rather not hear the refs voice on speaker and we can all get on with it when the decision is made.
