If Ornstein has this, it’s worth starting a thread about it, IMO.
That fee is insane.
Yan Diomande has again dismissed talk of a summer departure, saying he will remain with RB Leipzig next season. The 19-year-old Ivorian winger has been linked with leading European clubs.
Asked if he will stay, he replied: “yes.” He added: “I’m under contract in Leipzig and I enjoy playing here.” He was speaking to Kicker.
“Everyone has ambitions, including me. My dream is to play at the highest level possible.”
“Of course, if you imagine someone saying you have to go to Chelsea or Real Madrid to do this job, you’re going to be happy and motivated to do more.” “But I don’t think about this kind of thing because I’m trying to be focused on the pitch.”
“My contract runs until 2030, so I have four more years. I don’t know what’s going to happen after that. I’m a Leipzig player,” he said, while acknowledging that “anything can happen in football.”
This interview was from earlier this month and was referenced in Ornstein’s article. I wouldn’t put too much stock in it, personally. He won’t turn down a move if it materializes.
Could he be another we wait a year for…
They haven’t really been that successful
The interview is four days old. Over £100m is crazy for a 19 year old without a game in the CL. He has four years left on his contract and according to reports from this morning likely to sign a new contract to increase his wages and maybe put a release clause in it.
I just wanted to make it clear that your post wasn’t a response from Diomande to this report - that it was before it.
I agree that the fee is very high for a 19 year old. Then again, I thought 130M for Isak was insane.
I don’t think they’d get 100M, though. That’s probably pie in the sky for them - their top negotiating price. If they come down closer to 80, and perhaps their interest in Elliott allows him to helps serve as a bit of a make weight, maybe we’re looking at closer to 50M + Harvey.
I’d hope we will have learnt from fee’s like that
I mentioned when we were linked to the Ecuadorian CB, Ordenz I think, that it was an interesting one because there was no way to reconcile it with the principles that were in place when Graham was leading analytics. He simply didnt have enough games of a high enough standard to risk the sort of money being suggested or even allocating a critical spot on the first team squad to him. That’s a not statement about how good a player he looks to be what Graham had said about how they evaluate the risk with signing players. This link is exactly the same and assuming there is even the slightest bit of truth of it is a good indication that the landscape has changed.
I suspect that everyone else getting good at data analytics means we cannot wait “100 games” anymore before deciding if its worth throwing our hat in the ring.
Chelsea and PSG fucked the transfer market and we had to pay those prices if we didn’t want to miss out. Even so, £100m for a lad who has played about 40 senior games is crazy.
At least Isak was ready made and had a ton of experience to know what you were getting even though his fee was also ridiculous.
Lot of fucking money that
100M definitely doesn’t go as far as it used to. Thing is, Diomande could cost 50% more, at a minimum, if he has a follow up season similar to this one. His talent is immense.
I think RBL’s Elliott interest helps - like Quanseh to Leverkusen helped offset the cost of Wirtz, I think we could see something similar here.
I’ve been on the Diomande bus for a while, as the raw talent is clear to see. But the price has been going up and up, so it rightly gives pause for thought.
Maybe it will be done around £80M and Elliott can offset that and kick-start his career.
We need two wingers, mind.
Seems like everyone costs £100m thesedays.
I could be obtained for a much cheaper fee
Im still a bit undecided on him. He is quick and a goal threat but sometimes he looks a bit of a pace merchant.
Maybe Diomande and someone like Akliouche is the right combo? Less pace with the latter, but he’s clearly a footballer.
I’ve seen people comment that Nusa is a better option, but the difference in direct goal contributions between them is striking. Nusa could very conceivably add goals to his game still given his age, but Diomande is already there. For him to already be scoring that many from a non striker position at that age is remarkable and I wonder if that is where the cost premium is coming from.
Yes, I can’t remember if it was an article in the Athletic or on a podcast someone was talking about how we have changed up and are looking to get in earlier for the players we are interested in (can’t remember if it was after the Leoni signing or in January following Jacket.)
I don’t know if we are also looking at those we’ve missed out on and seen that they have been good signings for the clubs they went to and are trusting the identification process is good enough to go early.
That so7nds like something Rory Smith would say. He’s a smart lad.
