Question ought to be - how are Sporting signing him if his age would preclude us from signing him? Does he have a Portuguese passport or is his family moving to Portugal purely coincidentally, of course, for reasons nothing whatsoever to do with football. Ahem.
Rumour was we wanted this 17 year old, but can’t legally sign him, so we wanted him to spend a year at Sporting on loan.
Reality this 17 year old definitely cannot possibly be signed by us under any circumstances whatsoever but has gone (by pure coincidence) to Sporting, where we were rumoured to be sending him on loan.

To me that read EU clubs can sign overseas players, but UK clubs can not.

But not specifying here that it means only from EU country to another and not from overseas to EU which is what it implied it was talking about in the first instance.
