I don’t lay the blame for this at Howe’s door. I’m pretty sure he’d have liked it all settled a month ago but his paymasters desperately had to try and save face.
Been a horrible summer for him and no doubt impacted the start to their season.
I suspect the key flashpoint in this saga was their owner/chairman or whatever he is jetting in after our match with them to try a last-ditch effort to persuade Isak to stay.
They seem to have pulled their finger out signing replacements pretty much immediately after.
They’re so desperate they’re adding the £5m loyalty payment onto the fee we’re actually paying so that they can report it at £130m.
Don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone try and frame a fee in that way before. Apparently the richest club in the world but pushing a PR narrative over £5m he’ll probably take them to court for anyway.
I think this may be common practice. One of the reasons that reported fees are unreliable as there is not consistency in how they are reported and selling clubs will want to make the fee appear larger, while the reverse often true for the buying club (although exceptions will exist in both cases too)
I know they often do that with add ons etc but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a club make a point of saying they aren’t paying a loyalty fee and then add that to the reported transfer fee.
It’s not that they’re getting £130m, they’re just not having to pay out £5m on top of the fee they are getting. It’s a level of pettiness that makes me chuckle as it only reflects badly on them.
