Villa did seem to spend a bit more than what they could handle the last two seasons. Some high profile transfers too. I assume their expectation was that Emery would get them to 5th.
Their squad needs a bit of a refresher as well too. Plenty of known names but a not insignificant number on pretty high wages.

Last game against Utd - win and they get CL with 5th place. It was 0-0 with about 20 mins to go and they had an opening goal ruled out for a very dubious foul on the keeper. Utd then went up the other end to take the lead almost after. Villa had been playing like shit and were a man down so no guarantee they’d have held on for 3 points had their goal been given, but it was a pretty big gut punch nonetheless
