Andre Trindade (DM) Fluminense

Their position is totally reasonable. They have a very winnable tie in the QF of their equivalent of the CL. Why would they want to lose their star player now?
It’s a very tricky transfer from our perspective. We are extremely unlikely to get him before January and unless we get a cast iron preagreement, there is a good chance that he’ll be hot property by then.

TIA reckons there’s a 40 M Euro release clause. This may go to the wire on 1 September.

Even if we triggered that clause, the guy is a lifelong Fluminese fan and product of their academy.

Can you imagine Trent leaving us if we were in the semis of the CL?

It would look a lot easier if they lose the quarter final, but that’s very unlikely.

Also from TIA:

Fluminense could, of course, still be knocked out of the Copa Libertadores before the English transfer deadline, with their second leg against Olimpia kicking off at 1.30am UK time and the window closing at 11pm

That would be ideal, but they are favourites to go through.

Have to respect Fluminese’s position.

Yea saw that - they are pretty firm favourites to go thru.

I would do a deal now, for him to come in January, with a clause for us to exit in case of serous injury, if we choose to do so.

In the meantime, we are covered as Endo will be a good defensive midfielder and will help the other players do their thing.

Yep, deal at 25m now with medical done prior and he comes on deadline day if they are knocked out. If they progress, deal specifies Jan window provided new medical passed. Locks in deal in way that satisfies their requirements with option to exit if medical iffy due to subsequent injury.

Aren’t these Brazilian clubs skint? Extra 5 m and get him now not an option?

Probably not worth it to them. They have never won the Copa before, and only been a runner up once - in 2008. So the dream may be worth turning down cash. If they genuinely feel they can challenge this year, they can get around £5m for being the runner up, or £15m from winning it .

And the players can be sold for similar sums in a future window.

Knowing nothing about Brazilian football but what is different about this season that makes Fluminense favourites if they don’t generally do well in the Copa? Surely they’d never sell anyone if this is their model :person_shrugging:

They aren’t necessarily favourites for the competition, but they have an excellent chance of reaching the semis.
How would we feel if we were in the same situation and some club wanted to poach on of our star players?

Wash your mouth out with soap and water. We are not some club.

Seriously though, if they don’t need to sell, fine. They’re perfectly right not too. What puzzles some is normally these clubs need the cash.

Brazilian football is wealthy for South American standards, which explains their recent dominance in the Copa. They have won something like 12 of the last 15, but just as importantly their teams have tended to dominate the latter stages of each of these tournament as well. Selling their best young players to Europe is still a key part of their business model, but it’s more a controlled burn than a firesale

deadline day transfer it is

That was the first leg they are going through so it’s not happening.

If we like him, and only see his value going up as his star rises, we should sort out a deal asap, even if it has a delayed activation until January.

Looks like this is dead in the water then.
