Andy Robertson (LB) to Tottenham

If Robbo is pushing for the move, that’s one thing. Even then, I’d much rather we waited until the summer. He is still a good player and a good leader.

We are short in defence as it is, so if Robbo moves in January it makes no sense, unless Tsimikas is coming back, or we are making another signing. By the sounds of it Tsimikas might be coming back. He is not as good as Robbo, but he’s not bad either, and he is more likely to accept an understudy position than Robbo. He’s also two years younger.

If we are doing Spurs a solid, one can only assume it helps in a potential VDV deal. Let’s see what happens there, although I was laughing when I saw the price that Spurs apparently want.

Final comment on Kerkez. The lad’s ok! He started the season for us in a manner that looked like he was keen to impress, probably too keen. So everything seemed a bit rushed. In addition to that, the key to a defensive set up is a good understanding between the unit, so that needs time to develop, and with several players off form Kerkez had a slow start.

But now he seems as though he is up to speed sufficiently. He is helping the team and will only go from strength to strength as he matures further and the team overall improves. He is excellent in 1v1 duels, excellent for stamina and pace, while the passing and crossing can both still improve.

I think VvD also seems to trust Kerkez more, and that may also be another factor that Robbo to be sold.

Way I see it…this one’s Robbo’s call to make - he’s earned that right, we’re never going to stand in a players way if his priorities lie elsewhere and don’t align with the clubs. He’s got nothing left to prove to anyone and for the first time in his career he’s reached the phase where he needs to weigh up the best option for him, can appreciate the difficulty in the decision he has to make and it may be a case of one where he feels he doesn’t want to make, but rather needs to make. If it is to be the end then it’s been one hell of a ride and he’ll always be remembered as our wee flying scotsman.

He is captain of Scotland going into a World Cup. 100% understandable why he needs to move for more game time. He can’t afford to risk warming the bench for most of the rest of the season…

Robbo is what, one of a handful still here from the 2019/20 title winning team. We’ll have completed six seasons since then by the time the next one starts. If we lose a couple more from that group then it’s because it’s probably time.

We knew we needed a new left back this summer, one who’d actually put some pressure on Robertson. After a shaky start Kerkez has begun to show why we spent £40m on him. Meanwhile Robertson has shown why we probably wouldn’t be offering him a new deal at 31.

I don’t know why a very obvious parting of the ways, albeit potentially a window earlier than most thought, has to have some kind ulterior motive behind it.

Be happy for him to stay but there were rumours of him moving last summer. The arrival of Kerkez and lack of a new deal showed the writing was on the wall. Unfortunately for Slot he’s also possibly going to oversee the exits of Salah, van Dijk and maybe Gomez too. An unenviable job to be the guy at the helm as a bunch of long serving club legends reach a natural end of their time here. Doesn’t mean they’re leaving because of him though.

Robbo is this year’s vice captain appointed by Slot, am I correct?

I wonder who will be the new vice captain should Robbo move on (Szoboszlai)?

I think Ali or Salah would probably be next in line. I don’t think Szob is even in the leadership group yet?

I’m at peace with this.

I doubt LFC started the process and was likely started by Robbos team or Spurs picking up the phone. But Spurs ffs? I know they have been shite but will he just walk into LB?

Anyway, one of the great bargain buys in our history. One of my favourites and all the good things have been said above. But at 31 maybe it’s time, he aint gunna get better, and a little freight won’t hurt to finalise the deal.

Szobo for me as new VC and future captain in the waiting.

I thought Slot changed that by appointing Robbo as the vice captain, rather than how it was done under Kloppo that the captaincy / vice captaincy were done by leadership group. I could be totally off base though.

Hes only gonna cost £3m.
Might as well keep him

Andy should’ve started the season in the first eleven, and Kerkez slowly integrated (first coming off the bench each game and then rotation between the two).

This for me would’ve been the most sensible option, rather than making too many changes too soon.

Time has caught up with Andy, but we really could do with him being the bench option for that chase of 4th and the cups.

Wasn’t Andy injured at the start of the season?

Unless this is Robbo pushing for a move I don’t like it at all.
Robbo is a leader…we need that, sure time catches up with all of us, but at a time we usually look threadbare defensively it makes no sense.
Not totally convinced about Kerkez yet,Tsimi wasn’t really a Robbo,we need cover there, only then should we even consider letting Robbo go.
Is there an element of team selection here,we’ve have seen plenty this year, but that is for another discussion!

I can’t imagine it’s anything else. Spurs must have made some promises.

Kerkez is great, but we need more than one left back.

I don’t want Robbo to leave until the end of the season. We are already thin on the defensive side as it is. Also, he is one of the main players in the group who is influential in the dressing room.

However, if Robbo wants to go because he needs more game time to prepare for the World Cup, i understand his situation. He has won everything a footballer could dream of. I wish he wasn’t going to Spurs, one of our London rivals.

I’m assuming that the Spurs thing is because they have shown interest. I’m sad to see him going, but I was expecting it to be at the end of the season.

Footballers only get one career, and if he thinks this is the best move to prolong his playing days, then he has to take it.

Incidentally, his first Scottish league game was played just down the road from my old house in Scotland. He’s come a long way from a supermarket job and amateur football.

The boy from St Ninian’s school in Giffnock has come a long way. He has reached the pinnacle of world football. I will always remember that he was one of the greatest Left-Back we ever had and on one of the most influential players during the Jürgen Klopp era.

If Robbo does leave, I hope he eventually comes back in some capacity,
maybe a youth team coach?

what a role model he would be, teaching the pampered youth that he learnt football the hard hard in the lower divisions of Scotland, and worked hard to get to the top

You’d have to think Robbo isn’t happy at his game time, and he wants football ahead of the World Cup. In which case a move would suit all parties. The low fee mooted is obviously a reflection that we’re doing Robbo a favour.

I assumed he’d leave in the summer so this wouldn’t sting too much. But it does feel like the end of an era. Just Virgil, Ali, Jo and Mo left from the greatest football team the Premier league has ever seen.

These are direct quotes from the BBC article I linked above:

I’ve played through injuries. I’ve played when I’m not 100% fit. I’ve played when I’ve only been 50/40/30% fit for this club and my country. I always want to be on the grass and playing and obviously now that’s not happening, so that’s what is different.

I have a different role here this season which I’m getting enjoyment out of, but at the end of the day, footballers want to play and if anyone is sat happy on the bench, then they don’t belong at any football club.

Think that makes it fairly obvious that the change is driven at least in part by him, and at the core of it is what makes him the footballer we know and love. He understands the role he’s playing at Liverpool now, he’s getting some enjoyment out of it, but it’s not making him happy. Good luck to him wherever he ends up.
