If it happens, I hope the fan base will be able to give it a proper reset, or it won’t be tolerable. Imagine the pile on if the performances are iffy, or we get a bad result or two. It would cast a very large shadow over the club that would be almost impossible to escape.
I suppose that’s one more reason why I really can’t see Slot staying on.
It needs a new man, not least to prevent the above from happening.
Be pretty surprising if Slot stays, it looks he has lost the dressing room, not usually a plus, and admitted he doesn’t know what to do at times, and who really believes leopards change their spots, so what are the chances of a bald headed one doing anything different.
Apparently, this comes from a story by Miguel Delaney in the Irish Independent, which is largely about whether Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes might be off to Saudi. The slot bit is an “Independent understanding” without any source given.
I haven’t seen the rumours and would be surprised given the new contract.
I know @mascot has also been using this argument but I don’t really buy into it.
One of the reasons it was said Arne was recruited was precisely because of his tactical flexibility. For example, when he won the league at Feyenoord I believe the team’s attacking focus was through the flanks, however, the following season they deliberately sought to play through the centre.
Last season we won the league with pretty much the same wingers as we have this year, with Diaz often being deployed as the centre forward. Even this season, if the issue was down to the lack of wingers he could rely on, Dom could fill that need on the right - but Arne has continually said he doesn’t want to play him there.
I would also highlight the problem Arne faces due to the midfield - when he arrived Arne wanted a deep lying midfielder with a particular set of skills. He didnt get one, arguably because it was so niche, that he began using Gravenberch instead.
Yet I don’t recall links with any similar midfielders last summer and he has proceeded to try and play in a way that doesn’t suit Gravenberch particularly well.
If Slot stays you’ll see the exact same situation playing out like under Rodgers, I don’t think if performances don’t improve he will stay in the summer. They can probably accept a year without CL, but not two.
That’s what I would “understand”, if Joyce and others start saying the same perhaps I’ll expect they may keep him, but it would still be a mistake if you see no improvement over these next few months, and I actually think this will factor in to any decision. I do kind of see the argument of keeping him when he is still in two cups and in the CL places (pretty much).
I personally would remove him in the summer at this moment and I expect the club will if they don’t see any improvement. These injuries are nowhere near as bad as Klopp had it that season and he started to show green shoots which then led to the chasing the Quad season.
If truth be told we’ve not heard enough for anyone to know the clubs position, I think they are keeping silent and judging it as a whole come the end of the season. The position probably was that some months ago.
I am confident that if Slot is given a reprieve, we will be significantly better. What happened to Jota blew any chance of this season being a normal one and despite all the criticism, I do believe that he is a far better manager/coach than what he’s shown this season.
That said, I still don’t think that he is the right choice long term. He has clear deficiencies and limitations that have to do with him and him alone and unless he shows an ability to learn and evolve, which so far, he hasn’t, it’s only a matter of time before he does leave.
I think this is overstated. We have gotten worse as the season has gone on and if mourning Jota is responsible for that at this point then it points to a need to move certain players on. Fundamentally I think that Arne just isn’t able to communicate what he wants this team to do anymore - whether they are not listening or what he’s asking isn’t making sense doesn’t really matter.
Even if we were to win the CL, I’d still be comfortable with the club replacing him in the summer (ideally sooner).
It’s not just about the mourning though. The fact that we look so disorganised and unfit suggests that the physical and tactical preparation during the preseason was greatly affected.
If that’s the case, it explains why FSG think that Slot deserves a second chance, even though almost everyone agrees that he should be let go.
