Darwin NUNEZ: 2023/24

The best front three started yesterday, Diaz, Nunez, Salah. Having five subs, and two more excellent strikers in Gakpo and Jota to call on, keeps them all on their toes, which is as it should be.

If you are off form, you are on the bench. If your form is ok, but Jurgen decides he wants to shuffle the pack, you are on the bench. If there’s an injury, we have others who can play. If there’s a game where we are huffing and puffing, but it’s not quite clicking and going in the back of the net, we can change it and give their defenders a new headache. If we have a game already won, we can still change it and give their defenders a new headache.

It’s early days, but we look like we are building a side for all eventualities, and it is going to get stronger as we go. The defence will be the next department to be looked at, but right now, the strikers are ace.

Darwin Nunez is fast, strong, and he has an edge to him. He is laden with threat, and is weighing in with a steady supply of goals. The goals/assists to minutes ratio is excellent, and there’s a sense that there’s more to come.

My missus turned to me and said “Did you know Darwin used to skin rabbits and lay out their bones on his billiard table to measure their lengths because he didn’t have a tape measure?”.

Took me a minute to remember she’s studying evolution and she wasn’t talking about our Darwin.

Looks like he is going steal your wallet.

The baby face assassin…

I’m starting to think that he (along with Robertson) practices missing the easy chances :joy:.

Rory jennings flip flops too much with strong statements i find. One week Liverpool are back, title contenders, the next he claims they aren’t and so it continues. His content is half decent forsure, but always feels like his looking for the clicks a bit too much, pushing every narrative to the line.

Is that Forlan still on the bench for them?

Yeah I thought it was him too.

He is not officially listed among the coaches, but I love the idea that Uruguayan football is so tight knit that someone like Forlan can show up and be allowed to sit on the bench for a key game

There are a few footy youtubers (non-Liverpool) that are decent.

But most are there for the clicks - which makes sense if that’s how they make a living.

Another contribution. Missed him on the counter when 11v11, but he was ruthless when we did get the opportunity second half.

Better with him on the pitch as usual.

He was sharp as a tack today. Everything he did had purpose and menace

I absolutely adore this guy.

Everytime I hear people say that he is a #9, he doesn’t score regularly; I remember people used say the same things about Firmino.

There was another sequence about 5 mins before the goal where he was wonderful in the build up again. We had a counter attack and the ball to him was not good. It forced him to check his run and gave a chance to one of the covering defenders to pressure him. Darwin protected the ball but all the momentum was gone. Then rather than rushing to regain the lost momentum of the counter he took his time, turned away from the obvious pass and gave it back in the direction from where it come from into Mo. It was a better choice, but was also perfectly weighted and timed. Mo then took an awful touch and the move ended. But more really great work from Nunez.

He looks clumsy, but he’s really good in these phases.
