Darwin NUNEZ: 2023/24

Imagine if he could stop wasting sitters.

Iā€™m sure heā€™ll become even more ruthless.

Everyone misses sitters from time to time. Haaland missed two yesterday

Heck Mo missed a first time shot that was out on a plate for him today also. It happens

Yes but heā€™s bloody scored sixty goals or so, while Nunez barely has twenty during the same period! There are mitigating circumstances for Nunez, obviously, but I canā€™t defend his finishing that alternates between comical and sublime.

That chance on the turn earlier today - I canā€™t for the life of me understand how it didnā€™t at least go on target, even if the goalie saved it, just like I donā€™t understand how some of his goals went in.

His overall game, thoughā€¦ I criticised his hold-up play in particular nd itā€™s one aspect that is night and day compared to the last season. Holding his own against the brutes likes Dawson, creating space for others, bringing people into playā€¦ More of that, please!

Heā€™s probably going for the corner and got it wrong.

Not a fair comparison when you look at Cityā€™s plethora of chance creators compared to what we had for Nunez last season. City also had so many goal threats that it afforded Haaland more time and space as well.
Not saying at all that Nunez is as clinical as Haaland but there are significant mitigating circumstances.

It also helps hugely that Haaland used to live in England as a child and speaks English pretty much as his first language. Acclimatising is important.

Nice to hear Klopp give him the praise in his post match, especially the part when he mentions Darwin being more co-ordinated in his pressing/defending from the front even if before he always wanted to defendā€¦sounds to me like it was never an issue with Klopp over something he wasnā€™t doing, just something he could do better.

It means that Nunez was always willing to run and press like a horse all over the place, but that isnā€™t enough. It needs to be organized.

Nunez was our best player when we were struggling either side of the World Cup last season. The formation changed and he had to adapt his game to fit what we were doing, which took time, but it seems to have been quickly forgotten that he was consistently putting the team on his back for a good while there and was the only guy showing any energy or fight.

Every retrospective of last season seems to be about how bad he was, which simply isnā€™t true.

Darwin causes havoc all over the pitchā€¦Haaland just tends to wonder from centre circle to penalty areaā€¦I obviously maybe wrong, but thats my take on Dar v Beluga

I think Darwin is unfairly getting a lot of crap for his finishing. His finishing is pretty decent.

He just canā€™t tell a good chance or open net from a bad oneā€¦ with each have equal chance of going in.

Just get him four shots in a game and he is likely to score while also missing a sitter.

Couldnā€™t Salah have scored about 80 goals in that first season if he could finish :joy:

His build up play has always been unfairly maligned. It was a bit poor in his first few games for the club but pretty good after that. He was a consistent chance creator even last year. He looks even better now because we donā€™t have carthorses in midfield.

Itā€™s his pressing from the front which has noticeably improved. He is in sync with the rest of them now.

One of the first names on the teamsheet if he plays like this consistently.

We have all 100% gotten on Mo, Mane, Bobby and others (as much as I have loved watching play for us over the years) for missing sitters and wasting chances.

El NiƱo was a little like Darwin also - missed easy chances, tried 3 take ons and failed 2 of them in embarrassing fashion. It didnā€™t matter because heā€™d score a great goal or 3 by the end of the game.

Darwinā€™s game may lack refinement, but he keeps coming with Suarez like tenacity and consistently creates chaos in the box. Off to a pretty good start this season and I think the performances will get better not worse.

To be fair I like him, I donā€™t think he was a guaranteed starter at the start of the season but Newcastle game has shown some self belief.

As I said way back he needs to take his chances, I played devils advocate earlier in the week but all players will have dips in form, itā€™s why a squad is required to win cups and titles not just a first 11 which seems to be the obsession with some.

I think he got too greedy with the chance he missed. He had more time than he thought.

The goal was sublime though

You do need a first 11 though, you canā€™t just go giving squad players all the minutes.

Titles are won off the backs of your most talented players. Nunez has far more ability than the competiton we have for his spot. If weā€™re to push City, heā€™ll have to have had a good season.

If he continues playing like this, itā€™s his starting spot to lose. I really hope Gakpo and Jota can keep him and Diaz on their toes, obviously, but mostly because I donā€™t have much faith in our defending, so weā€™ll have to rely on scoring consistently. That said, there was time when Iā€™d have settle for 38 1:0 wins in the league, now Iā€™d be happy with 38 3:1 wins.

So far in the PL this season for his time on the pitch he has been up there with Haaland. If he can cement the CF spot as his own then he will push on and weā€™ll be more than happy with the goals and assists heā€™ll get.Outside of scoring goals he puts in a much better stint than Haaland ever does.
