Yeah. Very reminiscent of the responses to both the Mane and Salah deals. Few people came straight out and said “no, not good enough” but LOTS of people were very oddly concerned that we were overpaying for both, which is a position I find difficult to reconcile. Like, if you think they are only worth a portion of that fee, how do you square that you also accept they are good enough?

The other oddity, and I accept that it may be a different group of people making this argument, is the frustration among so many about FSG’s lack of ambition as evidenced by our net spend. These are arguments that produce more satisfaction for paying more for the same players so you’d think they’d love a bit of overspending.

Personally, Im sanguine. I have a lot of faith in these guys to find the right player and accept that might not always be at the top of the market. BUT, if I see them push the boat out to land one of their targets then Im extra happy as it is evidence of their confidence of it being the right target.

Thats simply picking the fly shit out of the pepper to be argumentative and making 2 + 2 = 5.

Because someone doesn’t feel a player is worth a certain fee now means that’s also saying he’s not good enough at all?

Not following that logic even a little bit.

EDIT: and I can already see how this one is unfolding…very little room for other points of view in an echo chamber.

I think it’s wonderful the club want to add a clinical striker to its squad. Amazing, in fact. I don’t care what they spend.

How much did Arsenal pay for Nicolas Pepe again?

That’s a good point, also a really foolish purchase.

His price right now is an irrelevance unless it prevents us doing other business.

We’ll only know if it was too much, about right, or a complete bargain in a couple years time. He’ll justify that fee, or not, with what he does here not with what he did at Benfica.

72mill i think.

Says the man getting pissy at general comments not directed to them :man_shrugging:

I concede there is a point where I understand someone being uncomfortable at a price being quote for a player. However, what we’re talking about fees that arent too far from being table stakes for players of this standing, as was the case with Mo and Mane. These were not arguments about the players not being good enough. I concede that is your argument with this player and I respect that. These were different arguments, ones about valuing them as comparable to far lesser players, ones that we’rent considered enough for where we want to be.

Clubs have been known to splurge money on people who they feel will be a long term solution. Arsenal got it wrong with Pepe , Liverpool got it right with other transfers (Alisson etc). At this point , I’d trust Liverpool’s hiring team to get this one right.

and that was 3 years ago. Makes Nunez’s transfer look better imo

You asked the question. You asked the question of those that felt uncomfortable the fee. :raising_hand_man:

Don’t be mad someone answered. And you picked out the most inconsequential part of my post. That’s pissy? What a world we live in.

Also?

To be fair, @Neukölln, here we are having a conversation about it! Pax.

Out of curiosity (and I might simply have missed it), what’s the cause of your concern that we might overpay for Núñez? Too much money spent there means less available elsewhere? Or do you think he might actually totally flop à la Andy Carroll?

Yes. In a long line of overpriced purchases.
