James Pearce called it a “done deal” last night.
So potentially £45m. Seems a lot.
Still awaiting a medical, guess that might take place today? Unless the club wants to get the Chelsea out of the way first.
But by all accounts, it’s in the bag.
Basically £32m + Hoever.
I like Hoever a lot, but I think we come out of this one significantly ahead.
Like few others I myself was pretty surprised and somewhat pissed at the Diogo price.
In real life everything isn’t perfect. You have to take the aggregate of things and decide if life’s been fair or not.
£61 millions for a world class midfielder and a very good attacker seems rather fair to me. We paid a similar amount for Mane and Wijnaldum.
We paid a premium for Diogo and had an absolute steal in case of Thiago. On the whole, life seems pretty fair to me.
The payment structure is very sensible too. We pay almost nothing, for a very good attacker, when times are lean and uncertain. Yes, we will pay a hefty fee on the whole but it’s been synchronized with our revenue flows.
£35 millions in short term would have really hurt us.
Furthermore it’s the statement of intent a lot of us wanted to see. We never shied away from a player we really needed, remember Alisson and Virgil???
Yeah, I would have loved to have Jota for £25 millions to be paid over five years. I’m going to do that now, in FM
Just seen this…interesting…
Yeah, when you look at the details of it, it’s astonishing, really. Edwards does it again.
Gotta say, not wholly convinced by this one. No doubt there’s a potential player there but this one is the first signing for a while that I feel might not work out. I mean, we’re due one.
Can understand that, I mean could he do it on a cold wet Wednesday night in Wolverhampton?
On a serious note though we should be immune from any lemons now for a few millennia …I mean we did sign Sean Dundee years ago:joy:
Here’s another one being planned for years. Most of our targets are usually long term targets.
**Cough #Mbappe2022 **Cough
It’s borderline creepy. Having videos of them on file when they were 14/15 playing in some backwater. I’ve said it before but it’s just as well our laptop nerds aren’t scouting in a female sport.
This just reminds me of that episode of Big Bang Theory where those two nerds hack a satellite to find a house full of models.
Already had one recently in Karius
Yeh, although the fee we paid for Karius felt like that was a bit of a punt anyway. That was also about 4 years ago, wasn’t it?
Got a feeling that once he’s been under Klopp for a season or two people will laugh at the price being called expensive. Also, maybe because they won’t get to work with Klopp, Werner and Sarr may never be seen as worth ~£50m now. Good players but I don’t think they’ll have that development to become special players without Klopp. Meanwhile Jota becomes our Ljunberg or Pires.
Hand on heart, I’m not convinced by Tsimikas, of this year’s tranche.
I think Jota will be great, though.
When under Klopp/Edwards have we dropped big money on a flop?
Thiago’ s a great signing. Genuine world class player and I don’t blame LFCTV for going nuts over it yesterday. Got everyone’s juices flowing, even mine, but I’m more excited about this signing. Partly because it came out of the blue but mainly because we’ve needed an attacking alternative that doesn’t require us to change our style of play. Jota ticks all the boxes from what I’ve seen of him. I was pissed off we didn’t buy Werner but more than happy with this guy. Already a really good player and we all know JK will get at least another 10% out of him, probably more.
When under Klopp/Edwards have we dropped big money on a flop?
Not happened so far although Keita hasn’t yet hit the heights consistently that we know he’s capable of. But that’s what I mean, the law of averages suggests we’re due a flop with one of our big purchases. Nobody gets every transfer right. The rest of the recruitment teams around the league are just incredulous at the hit rate of Edwards and his team.
James Pearce makes me laugh;
“Look now guys I may not have believed we were signing Thiago and definitely said umpteen times that there was categorically no chance of it happening unless a significant midfielder left for significant money first, and I might have been wrong about all That, I might have also had zero clue Jota had been a target for years and negotiated for for awhile whilst being wrong about how close we were on Sarr but… im behind a paywall so please pay a subscription to hear my thoughts… I mean inside scoop as to why LFC had to walk away from Sarr and settle for Jota… I mean I can’t go with the story Jota was the real target all along I’ve been pushing the Sarr story for weeks.”
In some ways I do feel sorry for LFC journos, they have to make a living whilst being fed specifically selected scraps from the club to help create narratives the club wants creating to help with their transfer business. Whether it’s smokescreens, setting up alternatives to make clubs cave on price or setting up reputations of struggling to get deals done to use when haggling payments and payment terms. Club is spectacular now at these transfer market black arts.
I think Sarr was genuinely a target we were pursuing, but Watford refused to be as flexible on the payments as Wolves, so we moved on.
We did a cracking job on keeping the Jota interest under wraps, though.
