RB Leipzig are braced for a potential surge of late interest in Dominik Szoboszlai, with Liverpool and Newcastle United among the potential suitors for the attacking midfielder.
A release clause that would allow the 22-year-old to leave for a set price in the region of £60 million expires today, meaning interested parties could face having to negotiate a higher fee should they wait until after the deadline has passed to open negotiations.
Despite their interest, Liverpool’s position has been that no offer was imminent but this will be put to the test as the clock ticks down, particularly if a rival club emerges and makes the running for the Hungary captain.
Talks between Liverpool and Szoboszlai’s camp have taken place over the versatile star, who scored ten goals and registered 13 assists last season.
Jürgen Klopp has made bolstering his midfield the priority for this summer and Liverpool have already benefited from a release clause by bringing Alexis Mac Allister to Anfield for £35 million from Brighton & Hove Albion.
Fábio Carvalho, the 20-year-old Liverpool player, is expected to seal a season-long loan move to Leipzig today, although talks on that deal have been conducted separately.
Newcastle have also been closely following Szoboszlai as they prepare for a return to the Champions League next season. They had been interested in James Maddison, but his move from Leicester City to Tottenham Hotspur for £40 million means that Eddie Howe, the manager, and the sporting director, Dan Ashworth, have had to look elsewhere for targets.
Szoboszlai is ready to leave the Bundesliga side, but should the release clause expire Leipzig’s position becomes stronger.
His team-mate Josko Gvardiol is the subject of interest from Manchester City and if they are to sell him, the German club would demand a world record fee for a defender, which would outstrip the £80 million Manchester United paid for Harry Maguire.
