You’re absolutely right. And if we’re talking close to the previously rumoured 8m anyway then it’s probably better to just get the deal done and keep good relations with Fulham for when we next want to do business.
Are you Kevin Palmer (please god no) or Fabrizio?
I don’t see how Fulham have any negotiating angle if he’s out of contract in the summer.
Because of his age, even if he’s out of contract we’ll still have to compensate them for his development, same as we did with Elliott.
That can either be agreed between the two clubs or if it can’t be, it goes to a tribunal to decide the appropriate compensation. For Elliott I believe Fulham wanted close to £10m and we were offering something silly like £1m. Because the clubs couldn’t reach a tribunal decided the figure.
It’s probably better for Fulham not to go to tribunal again as that likely means they’ll get less than they want and than he’s probably worth. It’s better for us to get this sewn up now than give the lad another few months of other clubs waving offers in his face, especially since he was all ready to sign at the end of the window.
It mitigates some of the risk on both sides. We’re going to pay more than a tribunal would set but still lower than if his contract wasn’t expiring and we secure him now with some degree of influence on how the deal is structured. Fulham get more than they would at a tribunal and some influence on how the deal is structured. And, the lad gets his future sorted and can focus on helping them win promotion without feeling like he’s screwed over a club who has been good to him.
I understand all that, I just don’t see how they get to add loads of add-ons on. Negotiating a compromise on the fee (somewhere between what they want and what they believe they can get in a tribunal) is one thing. I just don’t see how they have any clout beyond that. We’ve made it clear that we want him and he seems to want to come here. I just don’t see why we should be paying out millions extra if he gets England call ups or wins the league in the next 10 years*
*Speculation, I obviously have zero idea what the add ons are or how much.
Because we’re doing the same for Elliott as per the terms of the tribunal. They don’t just set a flat cost.
As @rab says, the PFCC don’t just set a flat compensation fee. The majority of high value awards are made up of add-ons. The usual being 25, 50, 75, 100 senior league appearances, international recognition, trophies won, CL qualification, and the PFCC will also include a sell-on clause normally between 10%-25%.
Then I don’t see the benefit on not just going to tribunal and paying a lower fee. If the player isn’t willing to hang on for a few months and sign on the same terms agreed in Jan, then I probably wouldn’t want him anyway.
But I suppose that’s why I’m not a football manager.
Absolute pain in the arse in terms of paperwork and representation I would expect.
If we really want him, and looking at how he’s doing, why wouldn’t we, why run the risk of not completing what was 95% of the way to being done?
Sure you could say if someone else got in his ear between now and his contract expiring then he wasn’t that commited to us. You could equally say us not getting the deal done and then saying him we’ll come back in the summer when your contract is up shows a lack of conviction from us as there’s no guarantee we would.
Given the relatively small difference between going through with the deal we had agreed and the fee a tribunal would set it probably just makes sense to do it now. Smash a few more videos up on YouTube and the ad revenue will cover that difference.
And knowing where your future budgets stand too. Presentation wise, agreeing the fee up front also looks better.
Look who is at number 7 too!
so we got two youngsters in the top 10 eh
3 if you count Bellingham
So we’re is the lean …
Crazy to think Barca have 3 of the top 10 best young players and still managing to fuck it up.
If they weren’t fucking it up then it’s unlikely someone like Gavi would be on there, because he wouldn’t be in their team.
Xavi is building again, it’s going take time but they are quite lopsided in my view currently. Great going forward but conceding two against the great Espanyol tells you the story.
Endrick is only 15, can’t leave Brazil until he’s 18 the fight for his signature is going to be crazy. He looks incredible.
