My issue with the fee is that the pressure is immense, on both the player and the manager. If things don’t click from the off, then the media will be like rabid dogs.
Still, he is one of the very best young players in the world who has the ability to make us the dominant force in England and Europe for years.
Honestly don’t think we need to worry. We only had 15 non-homegrown listed last year anyway. Mamardashvili makes that 16 and Wirtz 17.
Kostas goes to make room for a left back, Nunez goes to make room for a striker. Chiesa or Endo could move on if we did need another non-homegrown spot.
Jaros, Quansah, Bradley, Gomez, Jones, Elliott and now Frimpong. It’s not a group you’d want to be losing more than one more from but you could maybe do two at a push and I’m assuming Morton has gone at this point . You’d still have the likes of Bajcetic, McConnell, Nyoni, Danns, Koumas, Doak, Ngumoha as U21 options.
It’s certainly worth keeping an eye on and why if certain players did move on this summer I’d expect the likes of Gordon, Branthwaite, Guehi, Gittens, Dibbling, Wharton to be on the radar depending on who it was who went.
Will be funny if we go and sign Cherki instead. They will sell him next season for 50 million to Bayern i guess. Greedy guys. We have stuck to our word and given more than our best.
I agree, as someone who could well end up being the marquee signing of the summer…all eyes will be on him but it’s unhealthy to have this thought process at the forefront of one’s mind…and something we’d have to deal with as an aftermath if or when.
At the moment all the talk is “Oh gosh, how are Liverpool getting this generatial superstar and beating Bayern/Madrid/City to his signature”, & that’s what we have to believe for ourselves, that he’ll replicate his time in Germany in England, only for 2-3x as long, more trophies and all that record breaking stuff they come up with.
Cherki has a release clause of around £20M I don’t understand how Chelsea are paying £35M. The only thing we don’t know is if he is keen to join us or the highest bidder.
It wouldn’t be unusual to pay a higher fee than the release clause if the duration over which the payments are made is longer than that specified in the clause (I think we did similar for Jota). I don’t know if that is the case here (although the size of the gap is significantly higher so I assume there must be another reason?)
