Read somewhere that Leverkusen broke a gentleman’s agreement to not poach players from Cologne’s academy to their academy.
They stated that it didn’t apply to them because they got him in for their main team.

His youth contract with Köln was about to run out and Leverkusen got in earlier and offered him a deal. Wirtz was hated by Köln fans for years for that, although the people running FC Köln deserve some blame there, the talent was pretty obvious. Like I said some gazillion posts earlier, a lot of people were already talking about him even at that age in the youth team, even I was aware of him.

It’s far from a rule, but some of the best players in this game were known (at least within the industry) or even bloody stars already when they were kids of different age.
