Golf! What a great way to 'waste' 4 hours

I really struggled with long irons because of it. 5 wood, 3 wood ok but a driver never came out on a course. Couldn’t keep it straight and I was longer with the 3 wood.

When I stopped playing I was basically on the hunt for a driver that suited my swing after a few lessons had sorted me out.

Lord knows where I’d be now though.

I still struggle with my long irons, I always have. something about the feel of them, hence why I’m switching to graphite.

Although…my past few sessions with the Mizuno MP60’s on R300 steel shafts were promising. I still hit far too high a ball which limits my distance but was able to put the 3/4 irons about 190-205 I think? Unfortunately there’s a big gap from there to my 3wood at 245-250y. my AP1’s only go to a 4i, so I’ll be hunting for a hybrid 3 @ 19deg loft to fill that void.

The only important numbers are the ones on your scorecard.
Mate of mine played really well with his Ping G410 irons, but spent about £800 on a set of Ping G425 irons.
He complained that they were about 10 yards shorter than his previous irons, so he traded them in for some Callaways.
Could have saved a fucking fortune by either…
A. Sticking with his G410’s.
B. Taking an extra club.

That sounds about where I was with irons. Pros don’t help hitting theirs so much further, it distorts your thinking. My set weren’t great but they worked. They were a beginner set to be honest.

I could tonk a 3 wood a decent long way at times. 250 yds was easily doable off the tee which is why the driver was left in the car. No one was safe if I had a driver in hand.

Ah but this is how they get you. Display teams hitting 200 yard 7 irons and so on. Yeah, I can do that :flushed:

I wouldn’t know what a 410 was if it landed in my lap.

I’m in real danger of starting again here. Thanks for the bill and divorce you lot. :+1:

I don’t watch pro’s for their distance, they play a different game than the rest of us.

my last 18, was paired up with a couple fellas in their 50’s. three club members and myself playing my first full round of the year. I was happy with 84 but I struggled with my fade off the teebox. I’d set up for 10y fade right and it’d go straight 280. Set up for straight, and it would find the right rough. my only saving grace was 3 birdies.

Meanwhile, one of the members shot a 74 hitting no farther than 250y with his driver. lessons were learned that day. am now working on slowing my tempo down, dropping a club and trying to hit a gentle draw.

Just saying how the marketing works and it does, especially with the likes of Tiger and McIllroy on your books. If you can ignore (which you are by the sounds of it) and play a conservative game you’re onto a winner. But you’re already way ahead of where I’d be now anyway. I’d be lucky to break 100.

That’s what made Harman’s final round on Sunday so good for me. Be safe and putt like a demon.

True story.
About 15 years ago, played the Old Course with a “big hitter”.
I drove at 18, just short of the road.
He drove the green, back fringe first cut of rough.
I put a 9 iron to 7’ and holed the putt.
He chipped on, then 3 putted from where he was.
All he could talk about as we walked off the green was the length of his drive.
Nugget.

I was humbled by a 13yo girl last time I played Swan-E-Set as a single walk-on. found out after the round, she was Jr champion playing a round with her dad. they both shot low 70’s.

nothing long about their game, just 250-260y down the pipe. gentlest of draw, amazing swing tempo. was a pleasure to watch.

Used to love a game of golf and got down to low single figures but then got the chipping yips, would get next to the green then take 4 more to get in the hole.

Packed in playing due to getting to grumpy with myself

You can start playing again. I’ll be grumpy for you.

I’m an old git like you and therefore a grumpy old git on the golf course

Solheim Cup well and truly under way, and looking like it’s going to be a close fought contest already.
These girls are amazing golfers, every bit as good as the men, albeit not as long.
Great precursor to next weeks Ryder Cup.

Thats the plan. Gonna get myself down the range a couple more times before next Friday just to get my hitting distance per club worked out so I know what to grab from my bag.

It you are a legit novice, i’d totally ignore trying to calibrate your distance per club. You’re incredibly unlikely to be able to hit enough of them consistently enough to have a meaningful typical distance. Instead I’d focus on trying to get comfortable with the 7 iron and, maybe a 5 iron, and then just take that out for as many shots as you can.

Not the most fun way to play a round, but it is more fun that spending your entire round hitting your second shot from 10 yards in front of your first or constantly searching the rough for your ball

I just connected dots that we’re going to be away for a wedding during Ryder Cup weekend. My only possible saving grace is she is in the wedding and so saturday during the day I may have a good amount of time on my hands by myself, but will be very unlikely to be able to watch much if any of the final day singles.
