The new caddie shout has merit.
On the one hand, it’s Rory’s mate, so there’s a comfort and familiarity with that and it can be useful in helping a player be relaxed to do his thing.
On the other hand, it is Rory’s place of work, and at the very highest level there might come a shot, or two, that makes all the difference. For example, on the par three, the caddie should have said hit an 8 iron, heart of the green, get out of there with par. And the caddie should have been firm on that. But Rory hits a 7 iron, goes over the back, and bogeys.
On 18 the caddie should have said, strongly, fairway wood, or even a long iron, just get it in the fairway, wedge, two putts, and it is a par at worst. But Rory hits driver, and with all the tension of the occasion, he has to chop out from the rough and now he is under pressure to make par, and he bogeys again.
I’m not sure what a caddie would do to help the missed short putts. That’s just the occasion and the tension of the moment. With that said, had Rory not dropped 2 of those shots in the last few holes, he would have felt a lot less tension!
So on balance, yes, he needs a top caddie as it might be the difference between another major or two, and more heartbreak.
