Nope, water hazard incurs a penalty of one shot, no penalty there…and yes, my bad, forgotten that they’d changed it to 3 minutes.
Yes, one penalty stroke for your ball in a water hazard, but you dont have to find it.
Hospitality tent wasn’t part of the course, so drop without penalty is the correct ruling
I understand what you’re saying, but tent is a temporary obstruction that you get relief from. It does not sit out of bounds or in a marked hazard. To get the free drop, he should have to find the ball within time. I know it’s not the rule, but it should be. If you or I were playing that course without all the infrastructure, hit that shot, and did not find our ball, it would result in a stroke and distance penalty, playing shot number four from the same spot. I have nothing against Sheff, just think these guys benefit from rules that no other golfers get sometimes. Just a pet peeve of mine.

Yep, the tournament infrastructure sometimes helps them with wayward shots and they get a lucky break.
Did Birkdale do it proud, I know someone who works there and it was my local course.
Birkdale was fine, but the weather made it play a good bit easier. No rain, warm temps, and dried out heather rough made conditions easier than usual. Look forward to coming over to play there, and Royal Lytham also. Might just take in a Reds game or two also😉

Best score at 10 under for that level of golfer suggests the course was still difficult

Make them play the course in the condition we have to, with no marshals or spectators to find their ball.

With more lush and long rough, and some biting wind and rain would have lowered scores, I’d bet. Birkdale is a course where a hot golfer can go low, but a lot depends on hole positioning. Spieth shot -12 when he won, but in the two prior to that, the winner did not break par.
All depends on how the course is set up, and weather conditions. It’s one of the best courses on planet earth regardless.
I’ll be playing another one of those today, as my cross country trip has us in Medora, North Dakota, and we’ll be playing Bully Pulpit this afternoon. Winds are supposed to be 15-20mph

I played a fair bit as a kid-teen and a lot of tournament golf at that age is done on Stableford format where scores on each hole are converted to points. It means the worst you can do on a hole is a double bogey 0 and anything worse than that is still worth 0. So it’s not uncommon for someone to scratch a hole and just pick the ball up and go to the next tee.
One year I had a magic run where I won our local monthly event and qualified for the regional qualifiers for some national even hosted here. https://www.lindrickgolfclub.co.uk/ My club was hosting the regional qualifier so with a huge advantage and a not entirely up to date handicap I won that as well so qualified for the final event.
My dad took a couple of days of work to drive me 100s of miles to this golf club in Yorkshire and I was so out of my depth at that level. I sent my shot off the first tee a mile right into waist high grass and so hit a provisional. That one goes in even deeper. I spend 5 mins searching for them, find neither, so being 5 off the tee at that point I just walk to the second tee. I was met there by a tournament official informing me I had been disqualified as I didnt realize we were no longer playing stableford format

I entered a high profile scratch competition 2 years ago, only those 5.4 and below could enter.
Entered it purely for the experience, obviously wasn’t going to win it.
Got drawn against a +2 player.
After 13 holes I was only 4 over par, and lost 6 & 5.
Different level of golf, but a great experience.
