Still is the point he lost trust of Klopp and that if I’m honest Henderson is fighting in the same position as is Bajectic.
I don’t think Henderson plays any further forward than that unless needed. Klopp understands the need for Energy in that CM and that is what we are going after.
It’s possible that Fabinho’s form improves (his improvement near the end of the season wasn’t that special in my book) if he stays and plays a lot of games next season. It’s also possible that some other solution evolves (and that doesn’t have to include buying a new #6), which is also linked to how often we will be single or double pivot.
I’ve never had the impression that Klopp thinks this. I may be misremembering things but in previous seasons it always felt that Fabinho would be out the team for a run of games here or there particularly when the majority of midfielders were fit.
Wasn’t Fabinho dropped for Bajcetic for a number of games? Thuram intrigues me as a player, but I do feel a younger, faster, more athletic 6 to challenge Fab is one of the things the squad was crying out most for last year.
I didn’t have a problem with anyone one of Thiago, Henderson, Fab when healthy, but the 3 together lacked legs and engine.
I’m not sure we can afford to wait for Bajčetić to reach the level he needs to be in order to become a regular starter for us. We need an upgrade sooner than later. There’s also no guarantee he reaches that ceiling.
The challenge for him is to out compete the other options for the position. If Bajčetić emerges as the clear better player, there’s nothing wrong with selling on whomever we bring in now in a few years. It depends somewhat on what “big money” entails. Someone bought in “our range” of around £40m ( @The-AllMightyReds) should be straightforward to move on in the future. But I wouldn’t do nothing and hope that Stefan is the automatic solution.
If we judge we need a new #6 and we have the possibility to do it, we will. Whether Fabinho would have to move (which wouldn’t be only up to us) in that case, who knows (probably?). Bajcetic would still have the chance to “fight” Fabinho now and that potential new #6 around the corner.
In my view, Bajcetic has showed enough to be part of the first team squad next season. A slight maybe that he maybe won’t be if we bring another 1-2 players and Fabinho stays. Let’s also see who gets through pre-season and how, injuries and how a player looks in pre-season can sometimes change plans.
But more than that, that he would right now block us from signing a new #6, nah.
The other thing with that is we currently only have two non-homegrown spots left in the squad and little sign that we’re trying or have interest in anyone leaving.
Thuram and Kone would both count as non-homegrown for next season I believe, whereas Veiga and Gravenberch wouldn’t. Buying Thuram and Gravenberch means one more space for a non-homegrown defender should we need. If we went with Thuram and Kone then we’d need to move someone on if we wanted a non-homegrown defender this window too.
I think Veiga doesn’t have the games under his belt for us to feel confident judging him and paying the price being mooted. I can only really see him becoming a goer should other options not pan out and we feel we then need to take a bit more of a risker option or go without.
Very true. Could leave Adrian out the Europa squad and include Jaros as homegrown I believe and that would free up one more non-homegrown spot. Or we have to perhaps drop a centre back off the list. Maybe Matip given he’s not likely to cope with being able to play twice a week anyway.
It’s got to be a consideration the club are having to navigate though and you can see how the next deal could then be tied to any subsequent deals we’re looking to make.
