I am spoilt by Mane, which in a way is understandable because I watched the likes of Pennant, Gonzalez and Riera grace our wings for ages. I was always on the edge of my seat with Mane because I knew he would score more often than not. With Diaz (and Nunez, to be honest), I’m always calm and just waiting to be disappointed. The most disappointing thing about him is that he literally has everything a modern winger needs to have (stamina, defensive work, pace, technique, driblling skills) - aside from being able to score, especially in these narrow games.
Mane himself had a penchant for missing a glut of chances.
Forwards miss more than they score, but as others have said, Lucho terrorised Walker and the City defenders, just ran them ragged and gave it everything, which goes a long way in my eyes.
We don’t remember those though.
Diaz is on 11 and 5 for the season. You think with ten games left, he’ll bag a few more, and that’s not far off Mane numbers.
Not the first time I said it, think the first time was almost a year ago. But was also wanting him to have a proper full season after a proper pre-season. Had his family issues of course. And for me, it’s not only his end product in the final bit, but also getting there through multiple ways. Yes, he carries the ball and what I call it “stays alive” well, but that’s also partly due to a lack of solutions during that process. He can carry the ball from difficult areas to promising areas well, but also often end up in blind alleys. It’s at least positive if we stay in possession and he finds a red shirt eventually, but that’s not really his main task.
just my 2 cents and I’ll likely get crucified for it
Diaz is a player who runs himself into the ground, you can tell how leggy he got towards the end of that game. He barely got a sniff of the ball with Joe on that side as he’s right-footed and more difficult to play that ball around Foden. When the subs happened, that’s when we saw Diaz get to play
Those chances he missed we not easy finishes, and he was running on spaghetti at the end there.
If anyone on this board thinks those were simple balls to put away, go do wind sprints for 60min then try chipping a goalie with Kyle Walker breathing down your neck.
he’s not a pure finisher like Mane was, but he defends more and I think he’s an all-around better player who is just entering his prime.
Diaz better than Mane defensively and an all round better player? Nah, no way.
Entering his prime… well, he better hurry with that because he’s 27. If he plans to hit his prime when he’s 33, I’m open for that. But it’s unlikely.
I think it’s more of a reflection that Mane missed absolutely loads of chances. As good as he was. We just tend to remember the good stuff.
Everyone misses a portion because of the amount of times we ended up in such situations, but for the good of Diaz so far, let’s not compare their numbers. Of course, Mane took a little while to improve certain aspects of his game, which were not only related to finishing (par example being unable to string two passes together in the middle of 17/18, when he went to the left side), but from 2018 and 2019 on, he was brilliant. Diaz’s defending and pressing is up there, but Mane became a better and more rounded player even before Diaz at 27. Could provide across the front line also.
No way. Mane put in so many defensive performances like Diaz yday, in massive games too. We’ve maybe forgotten.
Mane scored over 20 goals in 4 of his 6 seasons with us. There were games where he was the best attacker and defender on the pitch. Diaz is a great player and hopefully more to come, but a bit unfair to compare him to one of our greatest ever players
Don’t forget Mane played with Bobby who was the architect to so many goals for bothe Sadio and Mo, such an easy player to play alongside as he was brilliant at give and goes
Mane also went on an injury holiday for 4-6 weeks every winter when it got cold. usually mid-Jan.
I love Mane but gotta remember that Diaz as had to recover from a bad knee injury.
But no need to compare as they both gave/give their all for the shirt
Can we have Lucho’s Dad as our fitness trainer. He makes exercise look cool.
Maybe Klopp can give him his Peloton.
maybe he teaches their daily Zumba class already
No wonder the kidnappers gave him back… He must have done their heads-in every day with his music :0)
Worst stripper ever.
Mane never ever played badly and never ever missed easy chances. Absolutely no one got frustrated with him ever.
Judging him by these standards, Diaz is rubbish and I am very smart.
