Marc Guehi (CB) Crystal Palace

Don’t we need to do that anyway?

Last time I checked, one more sufficed. However perhaps the FA have decided to change this rule too? Do perchance the rules now include a clause to the effect:

“if you’re playing in Red and your home games are played in Liverpool, then you must score ‘a lot more’ than the opposition to win; unless you have a brilliant defender, that also tap dances, sings and is a star of screen and stage, in which case one goal remains sufficient.”

He is quite decent judging by his performances for England.

Well yes we did identify good young CHs but we failed to convince them we are the club to join ie Lenny Yoro decided to to Manure and Huisjen went to RM and to find another one like those two will take longer as they are capable to be starter for our team despite their age. We have sold Quansah but he wants to play elsewhere for more game time . Guehi will give them that time as long as Van Dyke stays healthy and the Konate situation is going to linger for a while and getting a youngster with potential is going to take time Hato maybe?

Yoro isn’t good enough to be a starter for us

Clearly we thought Yoro was a potential opportunistic signing. Young, contract expiring, potential for development.

But once United come in and show they’re willing to pay over the odds and give him the kind of contract no one else would silly enough to dish out to someone with so little experience we rightly stepped away.

At this point we really ought to be trusting the people doing our transfer business. You think they’ll struggle to identify this type of target but there’s probably not a CB under the age of 27 across all of Europe’s top leagues that they haven’t done some kind of analysis or assessment of already. The fact we’ve let Quansah go despite not knowing what’s going to happen with Konate next summer points to us being confident of bringing in who we want.

Or that Slot just doesn’t rate Quansah and it’s better for him to develop elsewhere and the cash be put toward a CB that Slot is more comfortable with. At present we have a problem if either Virg or Ibou need a rest, let alone if they are injured.

We’ll be fine for a rest. Gomez is more than capable as a backup with spot games.

We’ll get someone.

And then we are having Endo as our ‘CB’ on the bench. 3 CB including Gomez is clearly not enough

As long as we’re not considering Robbo to be a centre back option.

Why not Maldini made the change.

And

Everyone was worrying that Guehi’s too short.

I thought that was nonsense too.

We can all cite central defenders who were short, but excellent.

For the purposes of what is required in the Prem, they are more the exception than the rule. It doesn’t mean you can’t accommodate any central defenders on the shorter side, but in all likelihood, you need to have some heft and height back there too.

Liverpool will play most teams off the park. Their best chance to get something will be the counter attack - hence our penchant for pace to counter that. The other way that teams will try to get something is through set pieces.

If down the line we end up with two of, say, Guehi, Lukeba and Hato - all good players at central defence, all with good futures - my feeling is we are literally leaving ourselves short, and inviting aerial bombardment from teams who we should be giving no encouragement to.

Internet arguments usually get polarized, but for the purposes of this discussion, we can all acknowledge great defenders who were shorter, so we don’t rule that out at Liverpool as we move forward; and equally, we can see the unique rough and tumble aspect that the Prem has, so we need to be prepared for that.

Van Dijk and Konate have us more than covered. When we get beyond them, the size of our central defenders will be something to watch and plan for. We could definitely do one of them on the shorter side, especially if they have pace, tenacity, and are decent on the ball. Guehi would be that man for me. But the future partner would surely need more height and heft.

Deadline day move for £30m. It’ll play out like the Oxlade-Chamberlain transfer.

Certainly not before the Community Shield against Palace.

It’s gone that quiet about him, not just with us but any other club, that it makes me think it might well be agreed in principle on this basis.

An England centre back in the last year of his deal, with no intention of signing a new one and currently playing for a mid-table club would normally be being linked/chased by every big six club in the country. The fact there’s zero noise speaks volumes.

Wasn’t there some talk of Palace buying Diomande ? I suspect the Guehi move will progress as soon as that one completes. Oh. Just checked, the move did happen a fair while back. I suppose Guehi wants some extra time to pack his luggage.

Yeah, last year there were links with at least us, chelsea and Newcastle, with the latter still needing a CB this summer i think.
