Guehi is a straight up upgrade over Quansah. He’s only available for cheap because his contract is running out soon. Probably 40-45m gets a deal done. We’re going to pocket about as much by selling Quansah so it seems like a sensible piece of business. Also Guehi will count towards filling the homegrown quota. Hopefully this gets wrapped up soon as we ship Quansah out to our friends at Leverkusan.
I doubt Guehi would be cheaper than Quansah if it all happens.
Guehi will be 15-20m more than Quansah.
Unless he makes it clear that he’s not signing a new contract with Palace and only wants to join Liverpool.
Guehi will be 15-20m more than Quansah.
Agree with that. But not a bad deal. He was 75m a year ago.
If he’s so crap in the air, why were people willing to pay 75m?
He is 6 foot tall and can jump. I cannot believe he is crap!
Technique? Timing? Positioning? Can learn it all from Virg.
Personally I don’t think Guehi is a starting level CB for Liverpool but as cover he’s a decent option and probably the best currently available given his contract situation, home grown status, age and experience.
If Konate doesn’t extend we’ll need to go into the market again for someone at least at his level.
Bit of a stats comparison for those that way inclined: The 24-year-old doesn’t grab headlines with spectacular tackles or flashy moments, but he offers calmness, control and an ability to read the game.
Guehi’s 2024–25 season statistics further underline his immense quality. He averaged a combined 2.6 tackles and interceptions per game.
This was more than Van Dijk’s tally of 2.5 and 0.8 more than Konate, who averaged 1.8 tackles and interceptions per game.
Due to his height disadvantage when compared to Van Dijk and Konate, Guehi’s aerial numbers unsurprisingly fall well short.
He won 2.0 duels per game last season at a 54 percent success rate. For context, Van Dijk won 3.2 duels per game at 72%, while Konate won 2.4 duels per game at 71%.
Guehi is the superior of the three defenders in terms of ground duels, winning 2.9 per game at a 63% success rate, clear of Van Dijk (1.5 per game at 62%) and Konate (2.0 at 61%).
His 43.1 accurate passes per game last season are 12.2 fewer than Konate’s (55.3) and a whopping 29.3 less than Van Dijk’s (72.4).
He created the joint-most big chances (five) of all Premier League centre-backs alongside James Tarkowski and Trevoh Chalobah.
Guehi was also in the top 10 for accurate long balls per game (3.3), expected assists (2.01) and direct goal contributions (five).
Was impressed with him at the Euros last year but those aerial stats are concerning. He’s definitely not our VVD replacement that’s for sure
He will turn out to be our Gomez long term replacement.
I really hope not, more injuries than goals or appearances isn’t something I hope from any new signing
Comparison with what we have in rotation is what should be made. Also might be worth asking what was his heading stats the year before and before that.
As I say I have no great knowledge of the lad, he’s sort of blind sided me. With what we are buying elsewhere and what we are losing he seems ideal mind.
Likelihood is when we replace VVD it might be a top first Teamer, maybe a youngster but I would consider someone versatile if we buy another as .
game time has to be factored in for a young CB
Even people who really, really rate him admit his heading is an issue. It just seems like the positives to his game - skill on the ball, press-resistant, good reading of the game, calm head, athleticism - outweigh that negative.
We’ve been linked to him for a long time, so I’m sure we’ve taken that into account with our plan for him. Hopefully being paired with either Konate or Virgil whenever he plays helps mitigate that weakness.
Rather than a set starter or no3 I wouldn’t be surprised if we’re bringing him in as someone who offers a different set of skills to our other options, and Slot will mix and match depending on the opposition.
The last part, I doubt it.
Defence and CB is not an area where you rotate much, especially Slot (even if he said it himself that he might have to rotate more next season).
If we’re bringing Guehi, it’s because we believe the total package is good enough to start for us. Whether that happens or when, nobody can guarantee.
But we’ve seen in the past that players can take each other’s shirts even at CB in the middle of a season. It’s not all precisely decided in offices during the off-season.
Wonder if a straight swap between Elliot and Guehi might work for all parties.
His aerial ability isn’t as much of an issue as his texting with sex workers history.
When was the last time we were involved in a swap deal.
They are very difficult to complete, as contracts etc get in the way.
Need not be a swap deal on paper. But I think that Elliot will be a good fit for Palace and vice versa.
Same reason Quansah wasn’t used in Wirtz deal its a basket case to manage.
Has ne ever been done? Surely they are both separate.
