Doesn’t matter how good a player is or how much he wants to come to us. If the club he is with are unwilling/ muddled/inept then we should walk away. It’s a waste of our time and disruptive to our squad
Until someone suffers an injury and decides to pay CP a big fee to get him in January or offer him a better wage to sign with them in July. Hell, a part of me wondered if Arsenal was going to try to hijack the move after Saliba got hurt.
Only way I can see Parish doing this is if Glasner promised he wouldn’t leave before the end of the season. Because he’s going to be a top name for any major opening which comes up over the next several months.
The lad they had lined up today swerved them at the last minute because Glasner told him he might not play him much. That, to me looks like deliberate self sabotage.
I think Steve Parish is in a good place to take about Palaces finances. He said publicly that the could not afford to lose Guehi on a free.
Perhaps, but I do have to give credit to Parish for backing his manager. It’s so rare to watch any club - let alone a mid-table one - agree to let a key player run down his contract instead of profiting at the last opportunity. It’s what any manager would want and I have to credit Parish for making that call.
Are LFC fans genuinely upset that we did this wrong??
Newcastle fans can be upset that we put our big boys pants and dominated the transfer window, taking whoever we wanted, like United once did.
But for any player looking to move to Liverpool, we have shown the utmost respect. Sticking with Isak and Guehi and never veering while those were both possibilities
Had CP been better run and had done their transfer business for Igor before literally the time had passed, we probably would have had time to move on secondary targets. But CP did us no favours.
If we are still interested in Jan, I’d make an offer for £7.5m and say take it or leave it.
I think one thing we have seen is that our crew are not thinking on a window to window basis. They have a much more holistic and medium term horizon with their decisions. We identify players we want and then we time our moves best on when is the best chance to land him. You do that often enough and are succesful with it, you are rarely in the position of having to do what is necessary to bring them in NOW to plug a hole. That appears to be what we thought of regarding Guehi which meant we could afford to be patient and not rock the boat. We are now in a position of likely getting the guy we want to be here for the next 4-5 years for free and Palace get nothing.
It was reported in multiple sources such as Di Marzio that deal was agreed between clubs. Transfers fall through all the time. The ask of Palace was to either find a replacement or call it off, they clearly went down many avenues including Akanji, Diomande, Igor and others but ultimately it didn’t work out.
All sides, with the exception of Glasner, were ok with the deal but it obviously hinged on them getting someone in. They tried, they failed. In January they will have to try again.
Liverpool aren’t the kind of club to sign players on a whim. We went for Guehi because we have long term plans for him here. We’ll be back in Jan to see if it can get done then.
How come Arsenal didn’t have this issue when signing Eze someone who was just as important to Palace. I’m guessing its because they said we want Eze here is 60m quid. None of this we really like your player can we sign him when you get a replacement in and we will wait weeks. Money was down he didn’t play in the next game transfer gets done.
