Guehi doesn’t seem to me like a character who will be problematic until January or next summer. The rest is impossible to know from the outside. But I think he’s a professional and nothing weird will be seen in the public on the pitch.
I don’t see it as a big deal or shock that Palace decided not to accept the offer, given their circumstances. It’s not about them f*cking anyone, it’s every side trying their best to do what they think is best for them.
You interpret it like that because you are literally desperate to talk down the club, and the people running it. Like that Jack lad, who’ll be along in a minute. You think you know better than the people who do this professionally, and who do so very professionally.
The fee was obviously agreed with Palace ages ago. Parish was happy to send the lad to do a medical. He filmed a goodbye video for fucks sake. Everyone thought this was happening.
The reason it went late, was that on the surface of it Palace wanted to sign a replacement, but it now seems obvious the biggest barrier to that was actually Glasner.
That’s obviously bollocks. They wouldn’t have let the player think the move was happening to the point of him doing a medical and making videos. It would be incredibly cruel and damaging to the club.
What have I said to talk down the club and people running it exactly? Literally haven’t mentioned them once, my focus is getting to the bottom of what “can’t afford to lose him on a free” actually means for Palace and to what end, Parish has let the manager he employs make the decision for Guehi not to be sold…in no business does something like this happen if there was a significant consequence waiting down the line, so to me at least it’s not reaaaaaaally that unaffordable.
“We can’t afford to lose Guehi on a free”, but actually tell you what - we’re gonna do just that anyway because the gaffa just reminded us an hour ago we couldn’t get a replacement in by a specific date. Ok, cool.
Exact same thing happened with Zaha when Arsenal bid £40m, Palace have gone on to do more than fine, where’s the drama?
Parish literally said we can’t afford to lose him on a free. He said it, on the record, on TV, after the Charity Shield.
It’s seems quite obvious that Glasner, who clearly does not give a fuck about about Palace’s finances, wanted Guehi to stay. Today the defender they had lined up to replace him got cold feet after being told by the manager that he might not get much game time.
Glasner has manoeuvred the club to the point where not having a replacement for Guehi gives him the opportunity to put an ultimatum to the owner - keep this player or I walk. Parish should have called his bluff.
I feel sad for Guehi. It’s a short career and he had a great chance to come in and compete for the Prem and CL this season at Liverpool, in his mid 20s.
He did everything by the book. Played and gave his all for Palace. Did not agitate for a move, but obviously he wanted the Liverpool move as there’s no comparison between Palace and Liverpool. He did the right thing, and then…
Got shafted in the midst of a power play between Glasner and Parish.
As for the future, I doubt Glasner will be there for too much longer. It feels as though he has a high opinion of himself and he will get a bigger club than Palace. They will not extract £35M worth of loyalty from him. He will be off as soon as a bigger and better deal comes along.
Parish has given in to his manager and it will end in a lose-lose situation for him. I feel a bit sorry for him, but not too much. Instead of £35M he will now get nothing, or a minimal fee in January, for Guehi. Parish needed to be stronger.
And having been bullied by his manager, he will receive no loyalty in return, as soon as Glasner gets a better offer than Palace.
Final comment on Guehi. Good player. Did the right thing by his club, as their captain. At the moment it seems as though his dreams have been dashed. I hope the redemption arc completes, and he gets his move to Liverpool and does really well for us.
Parish shit the bed when Glasner basically boxed him into an ultimatum. He looked at the two scenarios, and decided that one he could afford to lose most was Glasner.
For any misty eyed football romantics out there, who recoil from the shenigans of players like Isak and Wissa, the behaviour of Palace, and Glasner in particular is the counter point to that hang-wringing.
Guehi was sound all window. It was clear he wanted the move, but he didn’t down tools, he didn’t sulk and he didn’t go on strike. He behaved exactly how all those fucking pundits droned on all summer about how players should behave - and he did not get his move. He was used as a pawn in a power struggle between Glasner and Parish, and was dragged back to the club even after doing a medical and filming. He was shafted by Palace and his manager, in an incredible cruel fashion.
I don’t think we ever planned on getting a top level CB in this summer, it was not a top priority. Guehi was an opportunity for us to get him in early at a good value. So we were not in a hurry. While this now means, there is every possible chance Guehi can take his time to choose his next club, the ethos of right player, right time and right price, will never do us wrong. I see us still top of Guehi’s priority next summer.
That one is over then, for now, Guehi did the right thing throughout, good to see!
We will likely get him for a song, in time, the only one looking a bit silly here is Glasner, certainly cost Palace money, but hey, they are millionaires, really?
I feel sorry for the player he is the one it should be all about, but is the meat in the sandwich in this case is within Palace.
Guehi wants us it seems, hope we see the lad in our shirt in time.
Knowing Manure, they will pay for him and the amount will be so little due to Glasner’s contract expiring the end of this season that it will make Parish cry.
