Not sure what happens in January tbh. Now they’ve missed out on the £35m, Parish might actually decide to go all the way and lose him for free rather than just get a small fee, depending on how their season goes. Also, unfortunately Guehi has to be clear and say he’ll do his job until January and then he’s off, or he’ll do an Isak/Wissa. Otherwise see you next summer, maybe.
There is always the possibility that the fee is maintained or rises depending on how other clubs perceive the need for a CB (or wish to interfere). I think it will be important for the club to get something done this month to lock in the deal (pending the medical).
the comments last night once the deal broke down suggested that both clubs would meet later this month to agree a deal for the winter window. If so, I wonder how well Palace will do in bringing a replacement in then (or perhaps they just need the injured players to return to the squad to make the situation more tolerable with the money earmarked for summer spending).
Would imagine that Parrish will have a lot of making up to do with Liverpool.
Relations between club managements generally are cordial. This will not be the last transfer between both the clubs and Parrish will need to mend those fences.
Im sure Guehi was fuming yesterday and he asked Parish to let him go in January for a reasonable fee (something between £13m to £17m).
If Glasner is at Palace more than one more year I will be very surprised. I’m sure relations with his bosses will be frosty too. Guehi will be professional, but he has been shafted out of his move. Hopefully it comes back for him, either January or next summer.
I just don’t see the upside with the action they have chosen. They have lost 35M revenue, soured relations with the manager - instead of cutting him loose IMO, and it’s only a matter of time before he walks anyway.
If Glasner threatened to quit they should have told him to go. He has assumed a lot of power in the dynamic now, and a parting of the ways is inevitable. One year, max, imho.
I think it is too early to make these sorts of statements as there are still lots of variables to play out. They may put Glasner’s behaviour down to just the challenges of the job and go with it. They may earn more from cup runs etc than they would have otherwise that may set off the cost of anything they lose from not selling him this window - or if he leaves in January, the fee may not turn out to be lower after all.
I don’t think the club could realistically have done that. Losing both Glasner and Guehi, without any incoming replacement for their captain would have been hugely detrimental to the club. they would have had to find a new manager, and work even harder to persuade targets to come in January or next summer, when this was supposed to be a season to celebrate European football.
If I were Marc, I would immediately resign as captain and make it clear that he’s still a Palace player only “by necessity.” . He’ll probably be professional enough to handle it, but you can’t pretend none of this happened.
I dont see the point of doing that. I’m sure assurances have been given behind the scenes for something to be done. Let him enjoy his remaining time there as captain. Either way, he leaves within the next 12 months for the next step of his career,
I wouldn’t give Glasner the satisfaction that everything is now peace and harmony.
But that’s just what I would do.
Reckon this’ll be another VVD type sitch. We’ll nab him in Jan for 20M or so.
There’s absolutely no way we’d come back to the table with the same £35m, especially after what happened.
If we are doing well and CB injury free, and/or Leoni is impressing, then I’d leave him till Summer and give Palace nothing.
It doesn’t matter the circumstances yesterday, Liverpool were shafted
Lot of ifs there mate, would rather not play with fire and bring him on in Jan to ensure we can see out the season.
Fair comment.
Parish has let the manager he employs make the decision for Guehi not to be sold…in no business does something like this happen if there was a significant consequence waiting down the line, so to me at least it’s not reaaaaaaally that unaffordable.
Important to remember here is that in among all the UEFA fuckery and changes in ownership, Dougie Freidman their DoF also left his position in the summer and they have not yet replaced him.
This entire will they/wont they is in large part because the person who hired Glasner and would have been able to tell him that good run football clubs are not beholden to the short term whims of the present manager was no longer at the club. Parish as the money guy clearly believes they cannot afford to let him leave for free but without a DoF to manage that conflict, or even one in place to manage the potential replacement of a disgruntled manager, felt he didnt have much of an option if the manager was going to draw a line in the sand over it.
But this is not how a well run, self-sustaining club works.
Club remains , players and managers leave.
Parrish would probably learn this lesson the hard way.
Guehi will be the consummate professional and I’ll be very happy if we get him in. Exactly the sort of person we want to be in Liverpool.
I just don’t see the upside with the action they have chosen. They have lost 35M revenue, soured relations with the manager - instead of cutting him loose IMO, and it’s only a matter of time before he walks anyway.
Why is there this story that CP wouldn’t even entertain the thought of selling him when they released him for a medical? Is it papers trying to sell some post-deadline day drama? CP missed their target and wouldn’t go into the remainder of the season one defender short…
It sucks for us. And Guehi. But actually it sucks for CP too as they have missed out on a decent sum of money. Blame it on Igor!
