It was clearly pre-meditated, and caught Canada by surprise. You don’t really see fights in international hockey. It did appear to work, throwing Canada off their game plan to some degree.

In some ways the celebration of this is reinforcing Gretzky’s greatness. Gretzky’s record was thought untouchable but the goals weren’t the most remarkable thing about his legacy. He has more assists than anyone else has total points (goals plus assists). Now Ove has caught him in goals at 890 something, he is still over 1000 assists behind.
