Post match: Chelsea v Liverpool (EPL 13/8/23 8pm)

Maybe unpopular and not typical Klopp move, but I do think Gomez is better than Robo in this system.

Not after the Dunk one yesterday.

Take the point at Stamford Bridge, but weird game overall:

  • Taylor is a c**t
  • Could have been 2-0 up
  • Could have been 2-1 down
  • Should have had a penalty
  • When I heard Gakpo at false 9 I figured that meant in the 10 areas/not central midfield, but he was anonymous.
  • Hot take: We need a DM.

Taylor loved that play when he twice got in the way of Szoboszlai to allow Chelsea the ball on the edge of our area.

Regarding Trent that for me had to do with Chelseas setup with Chilwell playing as more of a winger and us not being in control of the game. He had to cover there too much for our new setup

Trent Alexander-Arnold: “The first 20-25 was really good, we couldn’t keep it up for some reason.” (Sky)

I don’t get this we just about deserved a point. We were more dangerous in the first half spell and at the end than Chelsea were in the middle part of the game.

Ok.

Shows a clear failure tactically IMO.

If Trent is defending at right back for most of the game, instead of creating in the middle or further forward, we’re getting it wrong. You don’t have your best footballer doing all the defending.

That Dunk pen was an absolute joke. But I reckon it was more about evening up the utter soft pen the useless ref gave to Brighton.

Then Webb probably had a talk to the VAR teams about handballs, then you get a situation where the VAR now doesn’t want to get involved.

Good first half with lots of attacking endeavour, albeit we looked v exposed at points.

Mostly poor second half in which we (mostly) kept shape but were sloppy in possession and lacked energy and intensity. Chelsea looked like they wanted it more and were able to spread the play far too easily.

Positives: Sobz and Mac definitely add another dynamic in attack, and our transitions into attack were good, at least for decent parts of the game. Ibra isn’t perfect, but I’m convinced with every game that he’s VVD’s natural partner and eventual successor.

Negatives: We talk a lot about Trent getting exposed, but it was Robbo who seemed to struggle this time around. Clearly a tactical issue. And yes, one we could partially resolve with a top class 6 - a lighthouse if you will. But we also need a great more deal of control at the end of the pitch. If Matip/Gomez played today instead, I think we’d have conceded one or two more of those chances.

Could be better, could be worse. Kind of as I expected really. Expect us to win next week anyway. Onwards.

Alisson - 8/10. Big save at the end, could have been quicker to come out for the goal, but generally good.

TAA - 7/10. Was decent, good in first half and average in the second.

Konate - 8/10. Battled hard against a good striker in Jackson.

VVD - 8/10. Led us well and did well in the tackle and the air.

Robertson - 5/10. Seemed all over the place and got rinsed by every player on Chelsea’s right.

Szobo - 6/10. Good run in the first half but seemed nervous.

Mac - 6.5/10. Did well, need a DM to help him, should not be doing the defending he has to and Sterling was left free in the half space alot. Unreal passing though, love him.

Gakpo - 5/10. Was not great

Salah - 6.5/10. Good in first anonymous in second half.

Jota - 5/10. Not great, poor touches all around.

Diaz - 6.5/10. Good goal, works hard but I did not notice him enough.

Nunez - 5.5/10. Not a fan of him, but did well with the shot but should have controlled a tough pass for an easy goal.

Curtis - 6/10. Did okay, nothing of note.

Harvey - 7.5/10. Did well, ran hard and tried to create things while defending well.

Ben Doak - 5.5/10. Only touched the ball 6 times, not a fan of pissing Mo off just to get Doak on the pitch either but big future for Doak

Agree, he loves being invloved in pushing us forward but mostly he did very well defensively, just need to have tactical resolutions to what Chelsea did, which was having both James and Chilwell high and wide and always outlets.

you’ve forgotten mac attack

Yes, the first half hour it looked like we would run away with the game. The last 15 minutes of the first half we were terrible and hanging on for half time. For large periods of the second half, it wasn’t great either. But it’s all about opinions, we all see different things during the game.

Szoboszlai is our motm.

Not sure tbh. I pick Konate

We did terribly at getting pressure on the ball and so Chelsea ended up with probably somewhere about 70% of the possession. If we dont have the ball we’re not going to see Trent in that inverted position.

ok 35 min until chelsea found their feet , same as last year
we are too predictable
we are easy to play against
our defence still poor and bless Alison for saving our bare ass
its beyond that a team allegedly fit for top 4 starts the season so depleted
Klopp is not evolving we are regressing the system is so exhausting that young players lost their legs , Klopp needs to look at this and learn its not personal its the system that is now known to everyone .

Tough game, Chelsea were a lot better than I thought they’d be so fair play.

Fair result. Should’ve have a pen, Jackson clear handball.

CB’s, Alexis and Ali fantastic. Some nice signs from Szobo with the ball too. Trent not as influential. Robbo Gakpo and Jota very poor.
