Good points ROTW, but who are we going to moan about?
There hasn’t been and there won’t be any glazing away as long as you are around.
You bitch and moan about Wirtz more on your own than the rest of the forum put together.
Coutinho’s best spell with us was playing deeper in the 442 diamond that we used in the second half of 13-14 and nearly won the league.
I do think Dom and Wirtz are seriously underperforming. But you can probably say that currently for our midfield. Obviously we have 4 very talented midfielders in Mac, Grav, Dom and Flo and I hope it’s only a matter of balance and that is what the coaching team needs to figure out. To me, the CM is most balanced when we do not play Wirtz together with Dom and Grav also with Dom. It seems to me only one of Dom or Wirtz can play at any time because both of them love to play in the same area. I would love to see us trying a Grav Mac Wirtz/Dom or Trey Grav/Mac Wirtz/Dom or even a Trey Grav Mac for a more compact and disciplined combination
Unfortunately didn’t get to watch the game, but delighted with the 3 points and the clean sheet.
I am happy for them all.
YNWA
Both Dom and Flo are allowed to play as a pivot and roam all over the pitch but sometimes Dom gets in his way a bit. As someone else said I am sure AI and his staff will make a note of everything that the players have done during the match and rectify whatever for the next match, we all have to remember that it was only the third match of the season but the players will be playing twice a week and sometimes 3 times a week from now on.
Shame we didnt win this game comfortably. Would’ve been nice to read a match thread without unnecessary shitting on our players and bickering.
He’s a closet Red I tell ya!
Dermot Gallagher the ref shill making out when Gakpo was chopped down in the box reason it wasn’t a penalty and why VAR couldn’t intervene is because it wasn’t in the box
Who wasn’t in the box?
The ref?
Or is it that the opposition player started his violent lunge from outside the box?
I thought var could intervene for violent behaviour, or whatever the wording is?
Gakpo wasn’t in the box when fouled or sorry not fouled
The mental gymnastics that the ref-defenders resort to is just pathetic. This whole weekend was filled with shitty decisions.
He knows who puts food on the table.
The incident should have been called as a foul, all 3 on ref watch said it was a foul, why did the ref not see it as such. Supposedly VAR did look at it and said it wasn’t a peno but were not allowed to say weather it was a foul or not???
It’s a mess. They cannot overrule the ref just on a difference of opinion (e.g. saw it but played advantage). But even if they had the room to intervene they cant do so for just regular fouls. Not even ones that demand a booking. So they’d need to know it was a penalty, and with the game not stopped they dont have much time to look at whether it was in the box (giving them the benefit of doubt, haha, that this issue is actually up for debate)
So we’ve got stupid situations like had the ref called it a free kick we’d probably have got a penalty, but because he made the wrong decision we cannot correct it with VAR because using VAR that way undermines the confidence in refs
It happened right in front of him so why did the ref not see what everyone else did?
Was it that Kerkez/Wirtz? cut across him and either got in his way or just distracted him?
Because it happened so close to the box that it could have been a peno, why not ask for VAR to look at it while play went on?(ie,“i might have missed something significant there, can you check for me”)
I’m fairly sure we have seen such incidents happen in the past, I even think a team scored while play continued but the ref then calling play back for a peno he should have given and disallowing the goal just scored.
Yeah, in all the discussion on how VAR is working and what protocols for its use are, the refs making frankly bizarre decisions on the pitch is getting way too much of a pass given the growing insistence on VAR being used with a “light touch”
I just think he’s not very good. Look at the foul on Virgil he let go as well, when he got undercut and stayed down for a while. I’ve had my eyes on him ever since that disallowed Luis Diaz goal against Tottenham, and I feel things are piling up against him now.
It might be unfair on him, there are probably other refs making just as many strange calls as he does, but he just seems a bit..off.
Another call he made in the Ipswich game: Jacquet putting in a borderline yellow card tackle not long after he got booked. Instead of dealing with it, calling the foul, he gives Liverpool the throw-in, and then I’m absolutely convinced he compensates for it by suddenly being very eager to do the quick count when we’re taking the throw. Finding a way to give Ipswich the ball without having to deal with the foul Jacquet made.
It is frankly astonishing he is ever allowed to be involved in our games again. Had the PGMOL stood firm and said it was a honest mistake and they dont change the assignments of match officials based on a ref having made a bad decision against a specific team that would be one thing. But they did ban him from being involved in our games for a year or so after that, and then just quietly removed that resitriction.
