Post Match: Liverpool v Brighton (EPL 1/10/22 3pm)

To Klopp and some he is above criticism.

Thought we might get away with it when we were 3-2 up, but the inevitable defensive lapse happened.

Very disappointing performance. Fabinho looks like a sloth in the midfield. Can see why a defensive minded manager like GS leaves out TAA after his performance today. While Hendo was instrunental in a couple of goals, he was otherwise anonymous. He is a player who needs plenty of minutes to get back up to speed. He was never going to play a full 90 and I think the only reason Milner was brought on was for leadership.

Way too many unforced errors again today, even when doing the simplest of things, we often couldnt execute them properly.

Everythingā€™s wrong with that, Iā€™m sorry but what?

IMHO it is perhaps I donā€™t use the right word but Matip, Henderson, Carvalho when we have so much better ā€¦

It looks like weā€™ve tried to implement a new approach which the players look like they canā€™t do or the legs arenā€™t there for. Need some pragmatism till we get some form back.

Feels exactly like when we had the center back injury crisis and Klopp refused to drop the high line back to protect the limited defenders we did haveā€¦ We only got back going when we dropped 10 yards deeper.

Not helped Trent, Van Dijk and Fabinho are playing their word football ever.

Hendo has had his fair share of stick even since his first season here.

Itā€™s a collective defensive failure. Letting the front 3 or even 6 off the hook because we scored 3 goals isnā€™t fair on the back 5. Our attack leads the defense from the front, not just by pressing in right moments and space, but also by ensuring not many opposition players get it this easy marking our forwards. Salah and Mane usually needed 3-4 players marking them, which contained the freedom for the opposite teams, especially the mid/ lower teams to get this easily forward and in numbers. Salah has been easily marked and defended by a player on him, Mane being gone and none of the others (bar Diaz) right now is someone who needs to be kept an eye on and scares the opposition to leave alone.

That being said, VVDā€™s form is a very big reason we are this open. He was impenetrable and many of the mistakes the midfielders or even Trent made were easily contained by Virgil. We never needed these many numbers to defend and now even when we fall back in numbers, none of the players seem to have the defensive nuance or idea which player to mark and where the ball will be played. Horrendous game reading and then even worse execution in our defensive play, from top to bottom.

Of the players that seem undroppable by Klopp, only Alisson and Thiago seem to be giving their 100 percent or are performing at the levels expected from them. Not sure if playing the rest to form is the right approach or rotating a few of them since we have the numbers now would be better. Really concerned by this season and a collective failure from everyone after such an amazing last season. Hope somehow we can turn the tables, this break was my hope :frowning:

Thatā€™s exactly what I was thinking watching the game. We look so laboured and slow. A split second to slow to everything.

Time has to catch up with players at some point and it appears to be taking its toll now.

Well he is probably a nice guy and a good captain outside the pitch but he is no Steven Gerrard on the pitch, he is not a deference maker IMHO.

Also I thought we were done conceding a goal and starting every game 1-0 down in 15 odd minutes after the little break and we are now transforming into conceding two :expressionless:

Am I glad I opted out of the match thread after Firminoā€™s first goal, and watched the match without the ridiculous knee-jerking going on here. This place is fast become almost as toxic as redcafe, and is definitely as reactionary.

I enjoyed the match much better without lots of you, especially our goals.

I definitely think I must be watching an entirely different game from many, given that I didnā€™t think we were anywhere near as bad as needing to tear up the entire team, sack JĆ¼rgen, or any of the other bullshit.

Our movement was a lot more coherent, and while we still left gaps as noted by JĆ¼rgen, itā€™s not like we were disastrous. Itā€™s underestimating Brighton a lot, especially considering that they came into this game 4th in the table. Their goals were very well-taken, and for all the criticism of Alexander-Arnold, they mostly came by overloading one side of our defence compared to the rest, leaving players free to run at goal. It was the same all over.

The way we play requires us to be fairly consistent, as JĆ¼rgen says. Get the defensive lines right. It doesnā€™t matter at this point if we play a high line or play deep, weā€™re just not as tactically disciplined as we were in previous seasons when our defence was a lot better. Our offside trap is barely functioning these days, compared to when we used to catch teams out offside all the time.

Iā€™m wondering what everyone is expecting, considering that the kind of changes we need to make are those with regards to freshness, training, and conditioning, which do not happen overnight. Most notably, each time weā€™ve had a 2-week or longer break in almost all of the recent seasons, we havenā€™t done well for the first couple games after that, but then went on winning runs after. Brighton is exactly the kind of team that is dangerous in such situations when a team like ours isnā€™t close to our usual standard.

Well that goes without saying doesnā€™t itā€¦weā€™'d do well if we ever have another Gerrard.

Heā€™s too busy barking at his team mates rather than looking at himself and focusing on what he needs to do to help the team, fact is heā€™s not showing for the ball.

When weā€™re on the attack heā€™s deep, when Brighton are on the counter heā€™s highā€¦never in the right position.

Rant incoming against our coaching, when will we start to mark men, their 2nd goal if VVD moves to Trossard and marks him he is covered! 3rd goal if Joel moves toward Mitoma he is covered! On both occasions our defenders are trying to step up and play offside.

I sitting in my chair at home can see this happening week after week after week and it is something we have been coached to do. We need to look seriously at our defending as a team and what we are supposedly trying to d as it isnā€™t working. Bad enough when individual defenders are making mistakes but we are being coached to mark space too much rather than tracking dangerous runners. FFS coaches go back to the drawing board and fix it!

What fucking tracking?

Iā€™d rather believe that people who have proven track records at developing systems to actually defend properly know better than someone sitting in their chair at homeā€¦

Imagine thinking we are playing well.

Weā€™ve conceeded the first goal 13 games out of 15.

We are currently shit, we start slowly with zero intensity and look shit. We are shit.

2 wins in the first 8 league games of the season. Itā€™s form which leaves us on 49 fucking pointsā€¦

FFS how can you defend our coaching in defence I have just explained 2 scenarios where tracking players would have stopped them being open and free and all you can do is chat shit, this is and has been a problem for more than this season. So say something constructive and stop being a WUM
