Re the mane disallowed goal…the ball hits his thigh then hand, maybe I have my red glasses on but how can he get hand out the way when ball is smashed at him from such close range. Also it makes less sense to cancel it when you find out if exactly the same thing happened and the ball rolls to Salah instead of going in and Salah scores the goal stands.
It does if 3 of the 4 defenders have pushed up and one hasn’t. The whole back line was all over the shop yesterday, playing like a bunch of drunken strangers. But I remember thinking Robbo was deeper than the others keeping them on and it cost us. I’ll have to check their goals again though to be 100% on that.
Presently we’re relying on our attack to win us games because the defence isn’t functioning properly and the midfield is struggling.
Handball laws have always been the most contentious because they were so open to interpretation. The way I view it is, if it was against us what would my thinking be and in this instance I’d have called it handball, accidental or not. I think they took the word accidental out of the laws haven’t they? We scored a goal through handball, no issues for me.
Mane himself was fine with ruling it out; There is little point in dissecting the decision when there were far more glaring issues at hand.
Looking at it again I’m happy with that call its not going in till it hits his hand.
Does anyone else find the Klopp quote on Keita injury think hes a bit annoyed with him.
“He showed me and told me it’s a hamstring issue, but I cannot say more”
I think Klopp was just being honest.
Got what we deserved
Completely switched off after the second and the second half we where asleep. No tempo to our play just slow pointless passing before we turned it over to them cheaply.
Game was begging for a sub Bobby had a shocker and somehow got 78 mins before finally Jota got a run by which point the whole team looked tired and out of ideas and he couldnt make anything happen.
Chalk it up as one of those nights. Maybe the first 2 came too easily and then we couldnt get going when required but is what it is. Back to Earth with a thud
Tyler Morton should have come in for Firmino actually, well, to crowd the midfield.
Guys, ladies; the CL game thread…
I thought Konate, Bobby, Ox-Chamberlain, and Jones were poor yesterday.
I don’t think it does. Any handball in the buildup to a goal means that goal will be struck off.
It’s different for defenders who won’t get a penalty so long as their hand isn’t in an unnatural position.
But for the attacking team, it’s any contact with the hand and it’s not a goal.
Changed on 1st July…
Accidental handball that leads to a team-mate scoring a goal or having a goal-scoring opportunity will no longer be considered an offence, the game’s lawmaking body the International Football Association Board has announced.
Lots of links to this but here is one
This.
A nice pre match thread to move on from the post mortem and start scratching our heads over the midfield options
Klopp’s post-match comments were spot on as usual - “the best way to defend against Brighton was to keep the ball and we didn’t do that”. Why on earth were we still pushing for an opening at 2-0 up. All we had to do was keep the ball. Just make the simple passes and let them come onto you. Anyway, it’s done and maybe a lesson learned and we move on. We are only 3 points back from Chelsea so it’s not the end of the world.
100% and this is where we miss someone like Thiago, it’s our biggest downfall currently… We start all guns blazing, get the lead and instead of just spending 10 minutes retaining posession and taking the sting out of the game, stopping the opposition getting a foothold we get all cocky, start with the stupid flicks, turn over posession and the opponent grows into the game.
People will look at the 5-0 battering of Utd but even in that game at 2-0 we had a 10 minute period where we did exactly the same and they had some proper chances… Luckily we scored the 3rd and the rest is history but it could quite as easily gone the other way.
It’s a cocky arrogance we need to cut out, we won the title on the back of being mentality monsters, by winning games by 1 goal built on solid foundations in defense and nothing stupid in attack.
You are quite right. Thought myself at the time " what is Robbo doing in there". Checked the replay, sure enough Robbo dropped deeper than the rest and put them onside… Must admit I thought both full backs were poor on the day. ( I do wish Trent would sort his hair out, looks like a rag doll )
The hat trick was a rare highlight (but a very straight fwd 6 yard Hattrick) but it’s his giving the ball away with terrible passing, not being involved enough and just not contributing and influencing things like he used to which mean his time is surely coming toward an end. Alongside CM, we need another forward this summer as neither Taki nor Divock look like being able to take his spot.
Needed that last summer. Got away with it as Elliot did so well . Look forward to seeing him back.
Klopp saying better than I could what I meant… We let having 2 goals being disallowed affect us and never recovered.
Wonder who he was talking about and their poor body language?
