I think there’s a way to be both. For starters Henderson (as captain) should have been straight over to Bluemoon when VAR intervened at the weekend and simply have a quite suggestive word. And he should probably do this a lot in other instances within the game.
By doing this you develop a relationship with the referee and actually win them over. You also start to sew some unconscious seeds of your own.
I’ll accept he’s a Bury fan then seeing as you seem to know who every Referee supports and who their kids have ST’s for.
The point is, he’s born and bred in Manchester, lives in Manchester and regularly referees United, City and Liverpool matches. If you can’t see the potential problems that might generate then I can’t help you.
I’ll refer you to the City-Liverpool game in January 2019 when he failed to send off Kompany for an outrageous foul on Salah that not only denied him a clear run on goal but could have caused a serious injury. It can be argued that that incident alone cost us the PL title. 0-0 at the time, a win for us would have made it a procession to the title.
Maybe there was the subconscious thought that he lived in Manchester. Maybe he just didn’t want to send Kompany off and give us a clear advantage. Maybe he just didn’t see it in much the same way he didn’t see James’s hand-ball on Sunday. We needed VAR to be in operation that night as is so often the case when Taylor referees us, although he had no problem seeing the 7 fouls we committed in the 2nd half on Sunday or the slightest of touches off Trent’s boot that led to the corner they scored from.
When all’s said and done the simple fact remains he shouldn’t be anywhere near our games nor should he be anywhere near the 2 Manchester clubs’ matches. The potential for controversy is always there.
Never mind the comments, how about the refereeing? That mentality of refereeing was by far the main problem! His job isn’t to listen to players over what should happen, his job is to make sure the laws of the game are applied fairly!
To me he seemed to fill the Gini gap for most of last season… thus he was there in body if not in soul.
I’m also slightly puzzled what he did that would have elevated him say over Harvey, Elliott is involved in the Burnley game. They are playing two different roles yes só hence I assume that’s why Elliott started as Hendo came in for Keita.
As said elsewhere the major puzzle for me was Jota out for Firmino, it didn’t much matter but to me he hasn’t really put a foot wrong and if I’m honest he is our deadliest striker, he will have a shot or get in those pockets, yes he misses more but that’s because he is having chances. Probably the same reason Salah always seemed to miss more.
That side with Mane and Robertson was dire mind, I think starting Kostas would have been fine with me, I think we had about three unfit and two out of sorts and we could have easily replaced three of those five.
Expected goal was around 2.46, it was very low for the Burnley game if I remember.
Seven points from Nine is what I expected and wouldn’t have minded, if Chelsea had played 90 minutes with 11 men I dunno if we would have seen much of a difference, I know the one time they overcommitted in the second half we had a chance so probably could have won with 11-11.
The next period for us was pretty dire last season against teams we should beat so let’s see what happens. Seems we won’t have the issues with the Brazilians in this period and the games still seem to be happening which means we won’t have a backlog at some point. I expect we may see the same until the lists go, Brazil is falling in cases finally but I can’t see it being taken out of red until the new year.
Hindsight is 50:50 and all that, but there were some shot down for even suggesting we should rest certain players who seemed like they were lacking in previous appearances and should consider nothing but our strongest 11.
This is isn’t I told you so, this is maybe next time people have a valid reason for an opinion it should be considered and not immediately dismissed.
The comments have been drastically misinterpreted. The reality is the way these refs are required to make their decisions is a convoluted mess. In medicine Drs use what is called a differential diagnosis where they come to your diagnosis not by evaluating the totality of the situation, but by breaking it down and evaluating it in a multi step process…if this then ask this question. If that then ask the next question. The laws of the game have become so convoluted that refs are now required to do this as well and Oliver simply got confused from having to ask himself so many questions and by the time he was done he forgot there was a player lying on the floor maimed from a brutal reckless challenge.
His point wasnt that he was not going to give the red unless asked. His point was that if it was such a clear case of a red the Liverpool players would have remonstrating about it and they werent. It was a huge fuck up, caused in large part by the way refs are asked to approach these decisions. But that was clear from day 1 (read my comments about the incident in the match thread). His comments didnt really add any clarity to the situation.
I don’t think I’ve misinterpreted the comments. My point was more that player input should be irrelevant, and ignored, because I expect these referees to be of a standard where they can deal with that convoluted mess, and make the right decisions.
He should not be relying on the players to remind him. This goes back to my point about how one doesn’t have to see a conspiracy or corruption to just see that referees are plainly inept. If they can’t juggle the requirements then they should be binned off. How many other jobs are you allowed to keep failing in (UK cabinet positions aside) and still get to carry on day after day without meeting the standards that should be required of you?
