If Hendo is on that pitch last night no way would Andersen have continually harassed Nunez to the extent that he did… If not getting in Tierney’s face pointing out the shit that was happening, he would have given Andersen something back himself… The role of captain doesn’t simply mean you wear an armband that others don’t… A captain should put the team and the individual parts of that team before his own game and performance… Hendo has mastered the art of this I feel over the many years he has played this role… Took a lot of stick from his own fans for doing so as well…
Milly, bless his cotton socks… for what he is worth, and the age he is at, spends too much time on his own issues rather than those around him… whether he wears the armband or not, his game is exactly the same… A good captain he is not.!
Nunez is a young raw talent, hyped to f*** last night because of the occasion is all… you only get one home debut. Not saying he needed a minder per se… but he needed help on that pitch last night and he didn’t get it against the dark arts displayed by Andersen… In reality, if the numpty in the middle was a half decent referee, the niggles that go on during a game and the individual battles that take place between particular players would be monitored and stamped out when tipping point was reached… With Tierney in the middle, it is understandable when players feel they have to take care of their own safety, their well being and ultimately their long-term livelihood…
Next time Nunez comes up against an animal like Andersen, he would be as well to go sprawling and spread-eagle himself on the pith each time he felt contact, be it a shove, barge, trip or anything… immaterial of what Jurgen has taught him, bring attention to the underhand tactics being used… make the numpty in the middle take some action…!
Agreed on the one at the end of the first half. His first touch should have better protected the ball and as it was he left room for the defender to get a foot in. The big miskick was the one in the second half. It was like one of the sand wedge shots that goes right under the grass making the ball jump up and then fall right back down to where it was just lying. Notably that was with his left foot and if you’re being harsh you might say the “bad” touch on the earlier chance was less a bad touch and more a conscious decision to put it on his right given we’ve seen him look weak on his left.
We didnt. The fact their goal was so against the run of play is evidence of the fact we started the game with the right approach and mindset. We got lost a bit for a 30 minutes period or so around half time, probably from the goal until the sending off, and that should be looked at, but there was not much wrong about the attitude or intensity in the period before or after.
The fall from their lad is greatly exaggerated and he even does a hand over the mouth yawn type thing before he goes down. But Nunez has allowed this Sunday league player to wind him up and get him a 3 match ban.
Hendo was immense when he came on. The pressure we get on the ball in their half always seems so much more consistent and concerted when he plays, either because he is directing everyone else better or just his own ability to know where to be to close down the passing options. When he’s on form it feels like the opposing team is just passing the ball back to him to start a new cycle of attack vs defense.
Not sure about that, first 12 minutes we were amazing, exactly what we needed… Then we started to slow down, miss chances…They scored and we lost our way completely.
The fact this has happened in our last 6 matches is now habit, and one we need to kick with some urgency. Defensively we are no longer rock solid, teams know how to beat us.
Fabulous performance but not taking the chances created. Down to 10 men with a nailed on red card. Great goals by both players.
All things considered we have gained two points from 2 games we may well have lost. Yes 2 games we may well expect to get 6 points before a ball is kicked but that’s not how football works. Fulham away on the opening day was always going to be a scrap.
Big game next monday that if we do get the 3 points things will start to look a little rosier. 5 points from our opening 3 games would not bother me too much in the long term,.
It’s of course open to interpretation, but I made my first comment in the match thread at the 25 minute mark commenting on how at that time we were still looking really good. They scored on 32. I did see a bit of a drop off in the time between the two incidents, so to me it seemed like for somewhere around 25-30 mins we looked great, but even in my rosy in game comments I was conscious of it inevitably dropping off at some point if we didnt take the lead while so dominantly on top and looking dangerous. We obviously didnt do that. And then they scored and our response was inadequate. As was the start of the second half.
