Or and I hate to say it, the tactics Utd used today against City. They worked perfectly and they came away with the 3 points. Sometimes, you need to adapt your tactics.
Do points have holes?
Your points were arguments that has some issues I think.
Maybe just points to stimulate discussion and not sarcasm.
Apologies for that last comment but I believe the points I’ve made are fair responses to your thoughts.
Right there is the reason I don’t go anywhere near Twitter or Facebook.
Just skimmed the thread and am pleased to see we’re all taking it well.
In response
- The CBs did OK today. In other games we have used midfielders.
- Are we playing deeper? If so, why are balls over the top still catching us out?
- Granted I’m not a formation expert, but I don’t think that the opposition are surprised by the way we play. Whether it’s diamond, or some other fancy name, we play the same way game in game out, maybe except when we’re in Europe.
- He might be injured now. And why is he injured when he’s not played a game?
- Matip certainly is, perhaps Gomez less so, but you need to plan for all eventualities.
Now I’m not saying Klopp out. He’s been brilliant. But, we’re allowed to ask questions aren’t we?
There’s an enormous difference between questioning what Klopp is doing to arrest this slide and calling for his head.
To your point - FSG have MORE capital now than at the beginning of the pandemic
Heck they had more at the end of last season
they need to spend - and they know better
Joint management eh? What could possibly go wrong.
Absolutely and I have lots of questions to ask. To me he’s clearly made adjustments but I’d also want to know what he see’s as wrong.
Every manager has a core way of playing. Whether that’s an Mourinho -everyone behind the ball and let them have possession, Dyche - kick everyone off the park, or Guardiola - possession it’s their core belief. Klopp is this team has been developed in that mould. Adjustments will therefore be subtle (unless you’re Rodgers) and I don’t believe they need to be more than that either.
From what I’m seeing now teams let us have the ball, they draw us onto them as we will naturally squeeze teams and then they can break with a ball over the top. Mourinho twigged this when he was at United and we have in the recent past been able to counter it. The line our defense takes in this for the majority is a natural one, on the half way line. It’s our position when they have the ball which is now deeper and rightly so.
Such has our injury numbers been I think we’ve simply been limited in the options we can play in midfield and defense i.e. we only have two fit central defenders (or midfielders that can play there) so we have to play a back 4. We dont have two players that can play the double pivot or we dont have the numbers to play a single striker and a player tucked in behind etc. I think Klopp has literally had his hands tied behind his back this season from Day 1.
That said I would love to know his private thoughts on why we are struggling up front, what has changed and where we are still going wrong. It’s too easy to defend at the moment, we’re too predictable and there’s no change in pace or position that can drag defenders out of position. There are massive challenges in playing squeezed into a 6th of the pitch, especially when you have one eye over your shoulder in trying to prevent the break against you.
This is why I’d want to see some real tactical analysis from someone who knows this stuff and not some pundit that kicked a ball once.
I think we’re all looking for answers but we don’t really know what the problem is 100% yet. I certainly don’t. What are we trying to do and why isn’t it working etc. I see plenty of effort but no real penetration. At times I see poor passing, forced passes and poor ball control so the problem goes deeper than that.
He is not alone!
I have been a supporter since 1956 in the old second division and have certainly seen the odd low point, but there has usually been a target point,ie, Woy, H & G.
Hard to see one now,Definitely not Klopp, want him here, injuries have made things worse, has Klopp been hamstrung in getting players he wants? That we know and don’t know about.
My initial concern was that some players look like they can’t be arsed,of some, sometimes that might be true, but not of all and not all the time.
In short…I’m fucked if I know,but I do know I don’t like it.
Probably this domestic season needs to be forgotten ,bring on Leipzig and hope that is better.
I don’t think Klopp will go, but if he does I want Julien Nagalsman.
And Rafa might get a short stint with us again.
You clearly forgot about the 2018/2019 winter that costed us the League.
I would prefer someone like Pochetino over Rafa, because Pochetino will certainly make effective use of our youth system, unlike Rafa.
Poch just joined PSG, I don’t think he’s going anywhere,
Rafa will only be in to stabilize the team he’s not a long term solution.
I think Klopp needs a long break though, it’s tough for him losing his mom and going through all the lows in life in addition to working the manager job 24/7.
As many fans eluded to, this season has just been a perfect storm for us to falter. I still think with some personnel changes, we will be back.
Some things that were obvious after the City game.
Liverpool won’t make the Champions League, which is unfortunate.
Liverpool will not make the Europa League, which is good.
Liverpool won’t win a trophy this season.
Liverpool will not get over 60 points this season, this is very clear.
Before Jurgen Klopp & Edwards got here, Liverpool was known as the team that never missed an opportunity to miss an opportunity. We did it in 2014 when we should have bought Salah and allowed a rival to pip us to the post over a few million dollars; only for us to spend vastly more sums of money years later. In the summer transfer window, instead of cementing ourselves as perennial title contenders, ownership and management conspired to fuck this team with their cheapness, ineptitude and arrogance. There was talk of “its hard to improve on the players in the starting 11.” A stupider statement was hard to fathom. There were/are players that we should have taken the opportunity to improve upon; those being Gomez in the back, Gini in the middle as an attacking mid, and Firmino who has been bang average for a year now. We in fact tapped up Werner, convinced him to leave RBL only for us to choke on paying the transfer and allowing him to join a direct rival. Make no mistake Werner would have improved this team with his pace, direct running at defenders, and runs in behind. We also lost out on Jamal Lewis to Newcastle and instead signed the ghost of Tsimikas. Again we sink back into the team that never missed an opportunity to miss an opportunity.
I’m not going to pretend that I wanted Tiago here. To me, he’s a luxury player who you sign after you’ve filled out the first 20 players in your team. For the money we paid and the salary, we could have had Maddison or Barnes who would have contributed far more to our point total and playing style. Not only that, but our direct rivals, City, United, Chelsea, and Spurs have 20-24 man squads of quality players; but Liverpool have at best 15 players of the requisite quality. That’s why it irks me greatly that we didn’t take the opportunity to strengthen the squad to the requisite quality in order to defend our title. Its negligence, ineptitude, arrogance, and downright incompetence of the highest order.
Yes, if we raised our “net spend” to above the level of Everton and Co, we could have bought Werner AND Jota, or Harvey Barnes AND Werner/Jota. With Harvey Barnes, you would have had a solution for Mane’s recent poor form.
And, buying a fourth CB should be prioritized over Thiago. When you play a back line of 4 defenders (2 CBs), you must have 4 true CBs at disposal (I don’t Fabinho as a CB).
But, the greatest failure is the 2018/19 summer, when we did not buy a single player despite just winning a fucking CL and having record revenues.
You really nailed it when you mentioned 20-24 player squad. A strong and sustainable team must have at least 20 high-quality players.
