We needed to be more physical. Newcastle played to the ref’s style well. He was never getting a card out till near the end, so needed more robust defending. Virgil at out corners had hands and blocking all over him, whereas we stood off Newcastle’s players when defending.
That’s probably the one main thing SLot will have learned from his first season.
True… however, Ryan has been struggling and off pace the last few games, and so has Macca. Only one still going full throttle has been Dom. front three has been checked out for a few games now. That PSG game took a lot out of them. Newcastle was resting.
Didn’t deserve to win today, poor performances all over the field.
Still don’t understand dropping Alisson for a final especially just to placate a GK who has publically said he wants to leave anyway. The team just never looks confident with Kelleher in goal and he had a few dodgy moment. (I know I know I’m a hater and “he’s never let us down” but we have one of the best GKs in the world and we drop him for our only final of the season to stop the backup from having a strop. Don’t like it.)
He’s had an amazing season but Salah gave us a view of what he will look like as he ages. If the club choose to move on from him I think its because the data will be pointing towards this becoming his new level over the next couple of years.
The agent of chaos, Nunez, once again offered nothing off the bench. Including chaos. He shouldn’t even be struggling for confidence now after the assist at PSG and goal against Southampton but its just not going to happen for him here.
Diaz worked tirelessly but he’s going through a tough phase where nothing seems to work. Wouldn’t be a big deal if the other forwards were playing well but they all look shite currently too (but none of them work as hard as Diaz does).
Jones, Elliott and Chiesa had a good impact from the bench.
Thought we went into desperation, fuck-the-formation, mode too quickly. It just became a random messy jumble from the 60th minute on with no shape or plan to us. We didn’t need to go to panic stations that early.
I’m disappointed, I’m actually like the League Cup but we didn’t approach the game correctly and its now multiple games that our attack has struggled.
At least these past two games should have given slot a reminder to rotate. Jota on the bench next game please. Also give Elliott, Jones, and Chiesa more game time.
Seems clear to me we need another athletic forward. Its why Slot wanted Diaz at CF. It works with Gakpo fully fit as that is two of the front three hunting and helping all game. Nunez in theory can do it but he’s so inconsistent he’s not bankable and then the physical dropoff to Jota is staggering. Then Salah is obviously not contributing on the defensive side of the game thesedays.
I expect a starting quality forward who is very athletic, tall and a pressing machine to come in this summer.
I feel most of the criticism is in regards to rotation, there is a lot of miles in some of our players legs and it showed.
Although, it is how we played that I can’t fathom, we rarely tried to play through the press, just went long most of the time, we have to believe in how we want to play.
Yes, sometimes the way to beat a press is to go longer but not all the time with hopeful punts rather than passes.
It was an absymal performance. Luckily with the international break, Ramadan will be over and hopefully Salah and Konate can return to normal levels.
Quansah was poor at RB. Robbo getting outjumped for Newcastle’s second goal spells the start of his backup role next season. Kelleher’s first conceded goal was just poor decision-making.
Huge learning curve for Slot who showed his inexperience in juggling multiple competitions at one go…
10 more league games to go! Hopefully, the heavy rotation comes in hard for the coming league games!
For FSG and Edwards, they will have to come up with some magic in the transfer market.
Currently even without considering the famous trio’s contract issue, we will need a CB,a LB, a ST and a DM that slot trust. If the trio decides to not renew, we will need another CB, a RW and a RB.
Hopefully, we raise enough funds by selling Kelleher, Gomez, Nunez, Diaz, Tsimikas and possibly Jota(at the right price) to the tune of 150 million to 200 million at least and pray that at least 2 of the trio stays…
