Only one team can win the Champions League end of the day, we gave it our best shot and came up short. I think when I was younger we were a much worse team and every time we lost one of these games it felt like it meant something, might be the last time I ever see us in the Champions League etc (especially around the time of H&G) but now its less impactful.
We came up short this year, we’ll be there again next year. Disappointing but not earth-stopping.
Fine margins. Inches from a totally different result. I understand this is true for both sides, but still, we are one of “both sides”. Not buying the not good enough theory.
Yeah, we hoist it 6 times, the most by far among British clubs and sitting joint 3rd among all winners to date.
Spare a thought for the Arse. They never even came close to smelling Ol’ Big Ears.
When Jurgen left I did feel it might be a long time before our next title. CL can go right for you and you end up winning it. 05 and 07 showed we didn’t have to be a brilliant team to go all the way (especially 2005).
Since then we’ve been to 3 more finals, I would like to have it more times in that period but title challenges up to the Klopp years seemed once every 5 years.
With the way our squad team is, in regards to real depth of quality we need to decide at the beginning of the season what our priotities are and for me Premier league 1st Champions league 2nd.
Good runs in the FA/Carabao cup should be and are secondary and all our bigs guns/starters should be rested until the final, (semi final if fixtures aren’t too condensed)
Reason being is that some of our starters are looking a little jaded both during and towards the end of games, this is both mentally and physically.
Also, Arne doesn’t rotate in games enough so too many of our squad players aren’t up to speed and then are relied upon to make an impact when they come on which is 50/50 in regard to the effect they are having.
Compare our performances now to our schedule of fixtures against Leverkusen, Madrid and City when our players were fresh. We were so on much more on top in those games, where now our players are looking a little jaded and we seem to be grounding out victories.
There is a lot of miles in some of our players legs and minds, that I am glad we aren’t in the FA cup and I sometimes wonder the same in the Carabao Cup, whether it would have been better going out early as Champs League progress is so beneficial financially to us and also in attracting players.
I say all this and i hate us losing in any game/competition and last years Carabao final win was one of the best with how we won and the players we won it with.
Thankfully we are 15 points clear and hopefully that is unassailable, but I would love our team to win it in style by romping further ahead and after the weekend our players should have some well earned rest between games.
Fuck me that was a long one and not sure I got across what I feel.
Those 2000s years we felt like a declining superpower who would occasionally have a good run. The 2005 CL was the best moment in football I’ve ever experienced but we could just have easily lost to Olympiakos, club is broke, Gerrard probably leaves and who knows where we go from there.
Kids thesedays don’t know how good they’ve got it!
Absolutely.
The 2 instances that stood out for me was Stevie marshalling his troops when we were 0-3 down, and then Dudek with his Grobbelaar-esque spaghetti legs during the shootout. Platinium level.
I was watching alone in my sitting room and I literally brought the house down with my yelps of pure joy.
Watching the Man U v Sociedad game and guess what gets given for a freekick against Hojlund, yes a hand in the mouth same as what happened against Mo, outside the area of course.
