Post Match: Liverpool v Real Madrid (UCL 21/07/23 8pm)

I’m not usually into this, but the xG last night was really interesting,

Liverpool 2.09
Real Madrid 1.66

What does that tell us? We were a bit unlucky, but Real Madrid are exceptionally good at tucking away low percentage chances?

What is worrying is that Klopp hasn’t sorted this out yet and we’re already past the halfway mark of the season.

Losing 5-2 was horrible but it wasn’t a 5-2 like the one we did to Roma. We basically shot ourselves in the foot 4 times.

Any talk of Madrid running rings around us is nonsense really. They are quality no bones about it but that result was mostly down to us.

Carra was 100% bang on about VVD. He’s been crap compared to his high standards. He’s never needed to be tight. His anticipation, speed and physicality set him apart. By the way Carragher is a pundit (mostly talks tosh) so he’s right to call it out. Wasn’t disrepectful. Also a great defender for us. Anyone says different is basing it on their dislike for him now.

Gomez could be 5th choice due to versatility. Hendo takes the Milner role. Milner becomes a coach. Goodbye Ox, Keita, Matip and Bobby. We love you but old father time has caught up.

I don’t we’re a million miles away. The forward line is fine with Doak coming through. He looks fearless, full of confidence. Couple of good midfielders and a defender will make a massive difference.

Not a worry at all. It wont….it cant be sorted until the rebuild happens. What can he possibly sort with a dead squad?

Not a dead squad, complete over reaction. A few players need moving on. Not the whole squad.

How are going to afford replacements…

A few players yeah?

  1. Adrian
  2. Naby
  3. Milner
  4. Ox
  5. Bobby
  6. Jones
  7. Hendo
  8. Gomez
  9. Fab

Probably looking at Thiago and Matip too….old injury crocks not worth the time no matter how good they once were.

Completely agree. A new defender, and a couple of midfielders would be my shopping list. We don’t need ten new players or anything daft like that.

Also I’d be interested to understand why @The-AllMightyReds thought the post above on xG warranted a laughing emoji.

I’m not really a statsy person, but my understanding is that a chance is given a percentage value, and the figure tells us that the chances they created would normally result in 1.66 goals scored. That does back up your argument that Real Madrid did not run rings around us. They were clearly better, but the quality was that they ruthlessly capitalised on errors and were incredible at putting away half chances.

I’m having this. I’m going to quote it anytime someone mentions the match to me.

Everything is fine.

Half the players on your list aren’t going anywhere. The other half can be replaced by a couple of players who aren’t perpetually injured.

Because he hasn’t got a brain?

You are Roy Keane, sitting in a TV studio with a face like a smacked arse every time someone says something about football he doesn’t understand, and I claim my five pounds.

He probably thinks I’m saying we were better than Real Madrid.

I bet you wouldn’t say that to Roy Keane.

Okay, he’s rightly a Liverpool legend for the longevity of his career, being a one club man and a local. And yes he won everything except the PL.

But even in his pomp he was only very good. He was too limited to be termed “great”

Its really nothing of note to be interested about,
Its about as interesting as the xG stat itself…you answer your own question with another question like xG is supposed to mean something….it doesn’t, another case to show it stands as the most pointless stat in football, something I’ve thought for a while ever since fans started bringing it up….a few years ago.

I don’t think it is pointless.

For example, I remember seeing that the player in Europe last year who most out-performed their xG was Darwin Nunez, and I’m sure that was a factor in persuaded the club to drop £80m on him.

My position on stats, is that they are never the be all and end all, like how comparing Trent and Hendo on their passing stats is pointless, but it can give some insight.

Low block? What da fuck is a low block?

Maybe but we could have done with him in his pomp last night. Throwing himself in front of Benzema’s shot rather than turning his back

No doubt. He’d never turn his back in a shot like that
