Glaringly obvious that the effort isn’t there. It could be that Klopp and his staff messed up the preseason from a physical standpoint, however it’s more probable that a good number of players is suffering from mental fatigue.
They were fine physically when they gave up a penalty and a huge chance in the first 5 minutes. And they had 15 minutes of rest during the halftime interval before conceding within a minute of the restart.
They look checked out. They are playing like zombies, going through the motions without actually putting in the requisite effort both mentally and physically. You see them yelling instructions to one another but nothing is carried out.
Klopp’s comments accurately describe what’s going on but they also convey that not even he knows why it’s happening. If it is indeed some sort of fatigue, it won’t just go away with a few tactical tweaks. The most probable scenario is that we limp to the WC break, before we scramble to save whatever is salvageable in the second half of the season.
I agree and think this is a massive part of it, which ties in with the fatigue.
Hindsight is 20/20, but it looks like pre season was too early and too intense following the ridiculous previous season.
I don’t like the way Klopp relentlessly sticks with players who are out of form in the hope they regain form. Give others a chance ( where possible given injuries) otherwise whats the point in having a squad.
Imagine climbing a hill and having your goal within reach when some cheating cunt grabs it before you.
Imagine that happening a few times in a four year period.
Quite odd trying to think of a MotM and actually trying to work out who came out of this with any of their dignity intact.
I’m actually thinking that the break for the World Cup might do us some favours. There will be a few of our lads who won’t be going or won’t be picked (I’m hoping Trent has finally pissed off Southgate).
I was thinking that this season would be a case of integrating some new faces with the stalwarts providing the backbone but it’s those previously reliable players that look knackered and, frankly, shell-shocked. The injuries haven’t helped at all but we are looking like a team at the back end of May, not one that should be hitting form at the start of the season.
The only positive I would take from this is that the substitutes did make a difference. Also, this was probably our hardest tie from the group. I suppose the only way is up.
Slept on this now and my disappointment / anger has subsided a bit. As a result I’m a little clearer in my thinking.
Pretty clear last night what Thiago brings. His positioning was entirely different to Milner and Harvey on the opposite side. He was tucked in and controlled his space. Milner was everywhere and nowhere, while Harvey for all his efforts plays too wide. If he’s deliberately wide then he’s too far forward. That leaves us wide open with TAA having the defensive nous of your average social media pundit. That leaves Fabinho exposed.
Still doesn’t quite explain VvD’s over passive defending but if you sort the midfield your taking a massive step forward.
Yes I think preseason played a big part in our problems but the best way through that is being tighter, more compact.
We need a rethink on TAA as well I feel. He’s a full back that isn’t playing as a full back but isn’t playing as a midfielder either. We need to look at how we manage him tactically and positionally.
Argh it’s frustrating but I can see a way forward.
Well he’s a wing back and that does require extra cover (which is why they usually have 3 CBs when used). I agree that he doesn’t seem to be one thing or another at the moment and that is also affecting the service that Salah is receiving.
If you are going to lose a CL group game then lose this one. Its early and if we win the 3 home games we only need a point from the other 2.
Klopp says we need to re-invent ourselves. This hiding has been coming for weeks so hopefully in a few weeks we look back on this and say it was the best thing to happen to us as look how well we are playing now - just like when lost 4-1 to Spurs.
Klopp either has to convert him back to a proper full back like in 2018-2020 a.k.a cutting out his forays into the centre, or turns him into a full-blown RCM.
Maybe. As @RedWhippet says he’s not one thing or another at the moment. He either continues what he’s doing but you probably introduce an extra body to cover him through a double pivot or whatever or you do as your suggestion
We need to sort it. It was a weakness we could live with last year. This year it looks like a Monty Python flesh wound.
Credit to Matip though, his introduction did solidify that side up a lot.
Depends on the person. Some would crumble, mentality monsters would be chomping at the bit to thrash them. When you get knocked down, you either get used to the taste of dirt or punch back harder.
Dawn lands and last night is now just a bad taste in the mouth. A win this weekend brushes that away. Our ability to win the CL is not governed by a dreadful performance and result in the first game. We won all our group games last season and we know how that played out. So we can ignore last night, 3 good wins and we’re through.
That’s the positives done. I think the negatives are best left on last night’s pitch.
Onwards, upwards, best foot forward, shoulders back and sort it out please Jurgen.
The contract talks which dragged on for the most part of last season, is definitely the reason why the whole team is terrible this season, everyone being jealous at him. They deliberately won 2 trophies and fell just short of another two out of spite.
We were the only team affected? City came the closest to playing the number of games that we did, playing 3 fewer games. They also didn’t have to contend with rescheduled matches causing further pile-up, and yet they have not been dominating teams the way many imagine they are.
The Jürgen Klopp who didn’t want to move to Manchester United because he didn’t want to move to Disneyland?
Yes, I’m sure he wouldn’t want your imaginary scenario. You also imagine he wants to give up on Keïta, and didn’t publicly pressure the club into extending Henderson’s contract.
