Even if Araujo does do well in Liverpool. It’s still a massive overlay on his salary too. He’s coming in at 250k a week.

Joyce doesn’t have a Scooby’s about management intent for Araugo. He’s just reaching so he can post something. We aren’t paying anyone 250k a week because he can’t play.
From what I’ve seen and read about him is that he’s a beast with occasional decision making blips that can result in red cards. Personally I think having someone who tackles hard and puts himself about is good as an example to the rest of the squad who seem a bit soft.

I dont read it that way. Had Leoni and Jacket not been coming back from injuries then it is likely that we would not have signed him.
Coming to the club to hold things together while they settle/ recover is an important, clearly defined role that can be negotiated further if both parties are happy.
I imagine his salary longer term is problematic for us if he isnt a regular starter. Then there are also the issues around home grown status and CB balance. We’ve presumably got our eyes on other targets for the longer term and want to keep a pathway open for the younger players.

Yeah it very much feels like a plan B or C. But we’ve seen in the past that these can work out wonderfully - I’m slightly skeptical and reserving judgement but hopefully this is one of those times. All we can do is support the lad and see how it goes - regardless I’m glad we’ve finally got plausible CB cover.

He can also play RB pretty well too so we get cover there. Barca used him there to mark Vini out of games so he can’t be too bad.
My understanding with him is that hes Ben told he’s no longer first choice at CB or RB and at 27 wants to play first team football. We are short staffed in defence so he’s gos good chance of playing somewhere regularly.t

Joyce, nor any of the ITK merchants knew that this deal was happening. No one was predicting a loan deal for anyone at CB. So, how would anyone be privvy to information concerning our intent for the player next season?

Then we have “experts” who know fuck all about the player decrying the move, despite the annual bleating about not buying a CH. He has temper issues, he has had a mental health break, he is injury prone, he is (lazily) like Darwin because he is Uruguayan. Loan deals dont work, wirh Sahin other than Anelka the given example.
Give him a chance. I’m looking forward to seeing him play.

We were always very naive going into a season with 3 fit CBs and then Gomez. It’s cost as a bunch too.
I wouldn’t be too hasty here. After all, Joyce is only writing what he’s briefed by the club. He can’t possibly know that Araujo is there just as a first-aid kit until Jacquet and Leoni are fit or to step in for Van Dijk when he’s unavailable.
I just hope that Araujo gets all the support he can get and that he will stay fit and in the right state of mind. He’s already spent a big chunk of his career at a high-pressure club, he’s now joining a similar one that is in a state of transition, this is why I don’t think the next season will be easy for anyone associated with Liverpool.
I do think that Barcelona fans view him as something of their Konate - a physically imposing centre back who can be sublime in one match and inexplicably rash in the other, whose strengths primarily lie in defending. Flick wants his centre backs to be good with the ball at his feet and in building attacks, so I assume this is one of the reasons why he didn’t want to keep him.

A VVD needed someone like Lovren / Konate or Gomez.
Conversely, it was only someone like Matip when VVD showed his best defensive abilities because he knew he had Matip to back him up.

Think folk are overreacting to the Joyce thing a bit. Seems to me a harmless suggestion of fans’ hopes for the player rather than an inflammatory statement arising from concrete briefing…

I agree, I think the ball playing bit is significant. Araujo is better than Konate there, but still, the demands at Barca are different to most other clubs.
Flick also implied it, that they have a particular way they want to play, and maybe he doesn’t fit in as well as other players they have. At least not well enough to be regarded as an important player, which apparently is why he decided he wanted to go.
One man’s trash can be another man’s treasure, so much in football is about finding the right situation. And I think with his qualities, being in the PL could be better for him.

I think it’s a great move personally and I am excited about it.
Good player on his day, form/injuries have come into his game last two years. I think if we can keep him fit until January then use him to help rotate Janquet and Virgil afterwards it will be a successful loan, then make a decision between him and Quansah for next season.
His leadership and experience will be good for the team. We are expecting Janquet to be back for the start of the season and Leoni back soon enough with Gomez. He just needs to keep fit to allow these a proper settling in period.

What is the point of asking a question, even a rhetorical one, if you dont expect it to be responded to?
Do we expect to get through the season with just Virgil and youngster at CB? No we dont. That is why we brought in Araujo on a season long loan.
