Right: having looked through it, it’s clear that @Sithbare is referring to the general midfield role often referred to as a number 8, as opposed to a defensive midfielder (number 6) or attacking midfielder (number 10).
That being the case, any of “he’s an 8”, “he’s a number 8” or “he’s a #8” are acceptable.
For extra style marks, the number 8 would be spelt out.
Looking at what he did yesterday, I can see why Klopp got him as he is creative in a very different way to our midfield starters

I always thought #8 was the short form of Nate.
Think we are all agreed he’s great at beating the press and just needs to work on his final ball. There are worse traits at such an age.

I find that people who smile all the time are inherently dislikeable, shallow fools that they are.
With Jones’ suspension, he’s in for really important three weeks. Endo’s pre-planned withdrawal last night maybe suggests that Gravenberch will start on the bench against Brighton but I’d really like Klopp to just swap Jones for him in the midfield that started against Tottenham. For someone who’s offensively minded, he doesn’t seem to mind the physical battles, at least in Europa League games.
He had a good game last night as one of the few. I’m starting to wonder what he can do when the opponent is not shite …
