Should TAN ban X?

Well thats a good enough reason to avoid it.

There were major issues with twitter prior to Musk buying it. Massive trolling and online bullying led to a huge rise in teen/youth suicide numbers for (I think) maybe up to 10 years before Musk.

But it has definitely felt more toxic since, but lets not forget that twitter had major problems before hand

Bluesky has a fascinating function called blocklists, where people can subscribe to a list to block, which should help with filtering out trolls, although I suppose it can also end up being used for cyberbullying.

Never understood blocking people, if you want to interact with only the people who agree with you, whatā€™s the point?

This is very true, but you can trace a direct line to Muskā€™s decision to buy it from the conservative politically motivated response to what attempts Twitter made under Dorsey and Parag to manage that toxicity with moderation.

It is a genuinely hard problem to solve, made much harder by how inextricably linked the process becomes with politics. But I dont think twitter, Dorsey especially, ever really wanted to seriously grapple with it. If there was legitimacy to the conservative complaints it was because Tiwtter never found a clear approach and so their moderation felt ad hoc, but it was clear they were doing something. The fact Muskā€™s acquisition resulted in a mass reactivation of a substantial list of previously banned accounts that were openly racist, white supremisict, and/or fascist makes the contrast clear.

Itā€™s not something I generally do. If Iā€™m bored with someone, Iā€™ll mute them. Blocking is only worthwhile if an individual resorts to abuse.

Blocking on Bluesky is fairly severe, and it can mess up other peopleā€™s timeline. Having said that, if someone blocks and then replies to the blocked poster, you get to see the fume but with no idea what they are fuming about, which can be quite funny.

How so?

You can get a discussion thread that is mostly interesting. Someone blocks someone else further up and you canā€™t see the start or the end of the conversation.

Actually, I wonder if they had fixed it, because I havenā€™t seen it for a while and it was very annoying.

It should be pointed out that blocking vs ā€œonly interacting with only the people who agree with youā€ is very obviously a false binary fallacy.

And specifically a fallacy that enables trolls and bullies.

Clearly, if you think the only reason it is done is to be with likeminded people.

Anyone I chose to block or ignore on social media isnā€™t because I disagree with them. Itā€™s because the have reached the point where I have realised they are just a fucking troll treating me as sport for their own amusement, and I canā€™t be arsed with it.
