The TV Thread redux

I couldn’t get past the first quarter hour. Cringeworthy dialogue, riddled with inaccuracies. This is one of the beeb’s worst comedy shows in recent years.

#HMSSinky is worthy of so much more.

What are the inaccuracies?

Too many to mention, from the totally implausible plot, to the dimensions of the sub which are totally wrong. Vigil is way, way too spacious.

Compare and contrast

with real control rooms:

It’s clear that the production team have never been on a sub or observed how its officers and crew interact.

It’s become a joke in vet circles, hence HMS Sinky, the setting for Vigil:

So they made the sub more spacious to be able to better film scenes - BURN THEM!!! And which fictional films/TV series have been accurate in setting the dimentions/space correctly?

And looking at that twitter account, I’d probably not take it too serious considering it’s a parody account

Who said anything about burn them. I just said I didn’t like the programme and explained why. Sometimes the extent to which the suspension of reality required is a step too far. In this case several dozen steps too far for me.

Of course it’s a parody site. It was set up to ridicule “Vigil” and all those who sail along with it.

wheel of time set to be released on amazon in november

having read and re read the books, is my favorite high fantasy of all time…

unlike a certain other show, it wont run out of structured book, either.

hope they do it justice. looks epic.

from my understanding they are going to strengthen up the girls story arc and focus on them more than the main male character…could work. could really work well.

I haven’t read the series, so obviously have no ideas about what things ‘should’ look like, but the trailer wasn’t very inspiring. Seemed ‘cheap’ and a bit too ‘clean’. But that’s more a judgement on Amazon tv not the source material.

A little worrying if the do the same with LoTR

Can’t wait! My 2nd favourite book series of all time.

Never heard of it, but intrigued now. Thanks for the heads up.

RAF Luton long predates Vigil, it’s brilliant twitter account!

What’s Steve Arnott doing on a sub anyway?!

I haven’t been on a sub in over 25 years but they definitely weren’t that spacious back then. Weren’t the subs in Hunt for Red October implausibly spacious too? Or are Russian and US subs just bigger anyway?

its only thirteen books long so plenty of time to get it in before mid nOvember!!!

the first…i dunno…140 pages read as a LOTR rip off, its not, it was a short tribute…then he heads off on his own adventure…

first three to five books are cram packed…it really gets bogged down in detail later in the series with political intrigue…if Jordan had a fault it was in his …ill call it padding.

instead of saying ‘redbj typed the word’liverpool’’

jordan would

‘redbj yanked his braid in anger, he did that when he was nervous or impatient, and this internet buffer time was testing his full resolve, he knew what hed wanted to write way back in Eamons Feild, hed written it a million times before, this time, not in the dark red ink of the mightly Elm tree from the two rivers, but on a device used for various purposes, hed managed to type the word LIVER when a small object took his notice on the corner of the illuminated keypad, the CAPS LOCK button was left in the depressed position signifying it had been left on…slowly he rounded on the delete button until all the letters had been deleted bar the mightly L, which sat proudly at the begining of the line…waiting…tempting him…slowly he depressed the caps lock button and began typing other letters…he knew the time was now, and soon the word Liverpool would reveal itself in all its glory on his computer screen…he longed for that moment’

Draexael will know what i mean…

well worth pushing through though…the world building is amazing…Jordan died before writting the ending…but his widow and a new writer finished the story to Jordans pre empted ending…a different style of writing was a relief at first for the last few books…but it was lacking something…particularily one part which just read as pure fan fic…(Matt Cauthon)

I read all the books as they came out. Was devastated when I found out Jordan wasn’t going to finish the series (the last three are ok… but not great).

It suffered from constant expansion… something like 2500 named characters, was always going to be tough to reel it back in and have any sort of satisfactory conclusion for all the characters/simultaneous plots happening.

I’ll watch series with great interest, but I’m not expecting it to be great… looks like one I’ll watch when the wife is busy lol. Hopefully they do story justice!

Edit: was also my favorite high fantasy series… but he did struggle writing women characters. I don’t know how many times they clutched their robes or pulled their braids in anger/frustration.

yep.

about nails it.

bit hard to write something of that scope and nail every aspect though…so if you immerse yourself in his world, acknowledge he wasnt the perfect writer but made a damn near perfect high fantasy world…

re the women…yes, he struggled a bit and its shown up more over the years of better developed femaile characters, but they did have a lot of power and influence and werent just peacekeepers and homemakers, but genuine goodies/baddies and manipulators…i can see where a modern twist on the Jordan world he laid out would be very special.

im gonna buck the trend…im expecting alot…there were alot…ALOT…of things wrong with GOT, especially when the books ran out…but the whole thing could have been done better…if the Boffins at Amazon have any awareness of the target audience they’ll do a good job.

it wasnt the newbies and TV show only fans that ruined GOT…it was what HBO expected them to like…turns out most people who were just watching it along for the ride, all, to a person, preffered the earlier stuff, done well, and true to the world that was set out in Book Lore…

the only reason we ‘dont expect much’ is becuase we dont want to be dissappointed.

they only get one shot at this…im going all in, really looking forward to it.

the myddraal looks damn near perfect in the trailer too…scary as all get out…

i even like the ‘smoke tendrils’ indicating the aes sedai using the power…you shouldnt be able to see it, but if they did it that way, people would just assume they were Jedis…

nah…i like it…im gonna be positive…im gonna say itll be a ripper…

(pretty please)

:+1: for sure, my tempered reservations are defense mechanism against disappointment, I’m watching whole thing regardless. I hope it’s amazing.

Yes sometimes it would get mirred in detail but I’m a bit of a skip reader sometimes so that never really effects me… I also think that can be condensed easily by good script writers.
I can also image on screen some of the more “boring” chapters like where they get stuck with the tinkers is a bit of a drag but I can imagine visually with the dancing/colour it will work well.

The world Jordan built, the politics, the story arcs and suprises I think will translate really well.

I’m finding it strange seeing characters and who play them, I think the Aiel will be a challenge.

Ironically I always prefered Mat and Perrin over Rand (who I felt was far too much emo for me!)

Have you read the Malazan Book of the Fallen? My no.1 series by far, on my 5th read through.

no, i will maybe try.

i didnt really stray too far from LOTR and WOT with high fantasy reading. i got “stuck” in both worlds.

cheers

and yes…i agree…some of those middle books could be filmed in full and they would naturally compress down…i mean, pulling a braid takes a second…explaining it takes an age…

Never got into Wheel of Time or LOTR, much to my brothers annoyance, no matter how much he tried to convince me.

I always prefered Raymond E. Feist’s Riftwar Saga and Robin Hobb’s Farseer and Tawny Man trilogies

I’m two eps in with The North Water. Proper grimey so far. Reminds me a little of Taboo, stylistically, but it’s on a boat.

I’ll watch anything with Stephen Graham, though.

Anybody watch Squid Game? Korean horror/drama. Interesting premise, (mostly) great acting, big budget. Fantastic show.

Started Alice in Borderland straight after, another Asian horror/drama worth watching.
