Not for a while, had a horrific injury will be out for a long time.

what ? had we already signed him or something?

Davies is much better.

Just link to us is strong enough in the force young padawan.

Why are we even thinking about new CBs?

VvD, Matip, Lovren and Gomez were more than enough for 3 years.

  • VvD #1

  • Gomez and Matip going nowhere

  • Davies should be a great addition. Better and younger than King Klavan. LCB specialist and finally a left footed player at CB.

  • don’t think the club expects Kabak to be a world beater in the next 2 month to buy him.

That’s already 5 and we still have our :black_joker: Fabinho.

Needs to be seen what happens with Nat Phillips but I still don’t believe that his contract expires.

Think Rhys and Sepp need a loan.

All a bit weird in my opinion.

Pavard, Upamecano, Lucas, Davies.

Pavard is either a more defensive RB who long term doesn’t see himself at RB, but at CB.
Lucas is a defensive LB who can play at LCB, but prefers playing LB.
Davies happened in the mean time and is a real positive story.

Now they have either more defensive full backs than Bayern need to play with and CB’s (now with Upamecano as well) who are all about the same size. Sule is still around but I don’t think he’s a player to be a key/starting CB for Bayern.

Oh well, it’s their planning.

Sepp got one. Went to Preston as part of the Ben Davies deal.

  1. We don’t know what condition and when VvD and Gomez will return. They’ll probably be back next season, it’s not guaranteed, its not guaranteed that one or both may have set backs.

  2. VvD, Matip, Lovren and Gomez actually weren’t its just because VvD played practically every minute of nearly every game since he arrived. Many of us discussed the problems Matip, Lovren and even Gomez caused us because of their availability issues.

  3. Why are Gomez and Matip going nowhere? For one thing they’ve both had so many injuries you never know how certain their future may be for another at his age Matip is at the end of his marketable period. We might well sell him whilst we still can and let his legs go on someone else’s pitch as the saying goes.

  4. We are hoping Davies will be a great addition but it’s a huge leap up several steps at once. Let’s not pile expectations on him. He could yet be with us for a short time leading to a handsome profit yet.

  5. Kabak will hopefully work out but not guaranteed yet that’s why we refused the purchase outright and the obligation to buy.

  6. Phillips isn’t good enough no matter how admirably he has done. He’d be a perfect 3rd or 4th choice at a lower prem side like Burnley. He’s almost certainly out of contract this summer no matter how much you don’t seem to believe it.

  7. Rhys again has done amazing helping us out in some really sticky patches, like Phillips nothing but thanks for him and he has something to him. But at the moment there’s huge deficiencies in his game that, unless he can overcome them, mean he has no long term future with us. Sepp is behind Rhys and Nat.

If the club aren’t actively monitoring and doing preliminary work on several CBs in case we need them then they’re being negligent. We needed at least two CBs this winter and there’s no way of knowing for sure yet whether the ones we brought in are going to cut it.

Again, I think you’re choosing to ignore how smashed the market is going to be this summer.

No-one is going to give us cash for Gomez or Matip. Gomez is coming off his third serious knee injury, and possibly the most serious one. Matip is perpetually injured.

There is no upside to trying to move on either.

I think some need to wait and see before talking with certainty about how something is going to be. Nobody can predict things yet. But based on evidence of what has been done I still think Matip will be able to be moved on for probably £10m should we be open to it and if he’s recovered by then (neither guaranteed). Wasn’t talking about selling Gomez sorry for any confusion. Was including Gomez in the open question over him and Matip that we can’t ever guarantee one of them won’t be forced into early retirement. Matip is the one I think could be moved on if he recovers this time.

Liverpool are preparing for the departure of Netherlands midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum, 30, and are interested in Borussia Monchengladbach’s Germany player Florian Neuhaus, 23, as a replacement. (Kicker)

I guess there are only a few players in the squad that we will not consider selling, players like VVD or Alisson at this point of time. By and large, I always believe that our club works on extracting maximum value, even over market value if we have to sell and provided we already have a replacement in mind if it is a key player. So I definitely think Matip or even Gomez is available for sale provided we get a right price and we think we can get replacements at the right person at the right price. For Matip’s case, I agree if possible, it might be the right time to move him on this summer but there are obstacles definitely.

What of this de Paul fellah? Never heard of him myself.

Udinese have not ruled selling Argentina midfielder Rodrigo de Paul, 26, in the summer following links with Liverpool in the January transfer window. (Goal)

Klopp once said something about Sturridge and he would more than ever (in our current financial situation) say the same thing about Matip. 'I will not sell Sturridge because it would be too expensive to replace him.

And compared to other injury prone players (Sturridge, Keita, Ox, Lallana) Matip doesn’t need game time to find form. When he is on the pitch he is world class.

If we have 3 or 4 other CBs (+ Fabinho) than Matips games and fitness can be managed better and he is clearly one to keep. At least we will have VvD, Gomez, Davies (and Fabinho) from preseason on.

We already need to replace Matip though even though he is still here. I also think that line is being made more of than it deserves, it was just his way of talking up Sturridge who wasn’t really ever replaced and, judging by the fact nobody seems to want to even sign him as a free agent, didn’t have any interest in buying him then either.

I think he’s a natural no. 10 at Udinese, Bielsa wanted to sign him last summer but I think Leeds couldn’t agree a fee.

So we can look at the condition of Matip, see that he has been so wrecked by injury and displayed a continual inability to stay fit, and conclude that we could do with getting him off the books. But we think another club would be unable to see this and be happy to invest maybe ÂŁ15-20m on bringing him in.

We have to assume that everything we see in a player that makes us think we need to sell (whether that’s fitness, ability, age etc) can be seen perfectly well by other clubs, and if you add into the mix that the vast majority of clubs are going to need to be extra careful about spending the little money they have, then there will be very little money to speculatively punt on a player like Matip.

Put it this way, if we commit £10m + wages this year on a player who has shown repeatedly he can’t string three games together, I’ll be livid.

As a side note on Matip, Klopp’s comments just after his season ender was announced we’re interested. He said something to the effect that he had put himself on the line for the club and now the club would stand by him and get him right. I interpreted that as Klopp suggesting he had been playing through injury and coming back too soon. I think

I think we go into next season with Van Dijk, Gomez, Matip, Davies and Kabak (or equivalent), with Fab/Hendo as emergency cover. We’re going to need lots of cover until we are happy that Van Dijk and Gomez are back fully.

Buy Harvey Barnes, full stop, plain and simple.

Next, buy another 6ft1-6ft3 CF to make Arnold and Robbo’s job easier.

Perhaps, but if we consider Virgil our “1A” centerback, then I would sign a “1B” player to put ahead of Matip and Gomez (in that order). Probably keep Gomez longer-term simply because he uses a domestic development spot.

A depressed market also means that we can find some favorable deals for incoming players. The “Premier League premium” doesn’t seem to be in effect at the moment. As long as we can drag ourselves over the 4th place line to stay in the CL, our spending power should still be higher than the vast majority of foreign clubs.
