Playing mainly as a CB now. Not the tallest with 1,8m.

BBC have slightly misstated that. Heā€™s not out of contract with Bayern in January, his contract ends next summer. He can, however, enter into a pre-contract agreement with a club outside of Germany in January for a move in the summer. I personally canā€™t see us being interested.

Heā€™s an excellent player but one that we donā€™t really need as we already have very good specialists in the positions that he can cover. The wages heā€™s asking for are also very high. We could overcome that with a generous signing fee to keep the wages over the length of his contract within the wage heirarchy that exists at the club (ala Milner) and perhaps heā€™s the ideal Millie replacement given his incredible versatility.

Hmmā€¦I think Iā€™ve just talked myself around in the space of one paragraph. Get him signed up to join us on a free next summer, hopefully he can cover the loss of Wijnaldum and offer the exceptional cover we currently get from Milner but which is on the wane (he may also move on next summer as well).

What Alaba isnā€™t, however, is a 3rd/4th CB. I accept thatā€™s the role heā€™s currently playing but in our set up and in the PL I donā€™t believe he solves our issues here.

Iā€™d be all over Alabaā€™s signing if it was financially feasible, heā€™s a top class player and extremely versatile. I think I read the other day that Liverpoolā€™s current squad is the fifth oldest in the league, so signing him wouldnā€™t help in that regard but Wijnaldum is probably gone next summer and Milner is not getting any younger, so he wouldnā€™t impact the squad average age and heā€™d replace one or even two most versatile players in current setup. His injury record is pretty good, too, at least I canā€™t recall him having a serious injury in his career.

Iā€™ve made my position perfectly clear.

What if our set up was to change due to lack of fit CBs.

Then the funds that would be required to bring in Alaba would need to be put towards a CB instead. I think CB will be sorted in Jan though.

I hope theyā€™ve done their groundwork as weā€™re gonna be hit with quotes of double the price due to our prediciment.

5th choice? Iā€™d say heā€™s 6th or arguably even 7th while Shaq is still here. That of course doesnā€™t mean itā€™s always the case, depends on the game that day/opposition/our needs.

In reality if we want to add a CB, unless they are home grown, someone needs to leave or not be used. Origi is most likely candidate. If you look at the most attacking 4 positions the front 3 and most offensive CM in 433 or front 4 in 4231 Iā€™d say Salah, Mane, Firmino, Jota, Jones, Keita, Minamino, Ox and Shaqiri are all now ahead of him. Elliott may have been too if we hadnā€™t had such a good last minute loan offer. Best for all involved if he moves on perm but loan at the least.

Milner skews those figures hugely though. When he leaves the average age will drop 8 years.

Liverpool are still interested in Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly and will make another bid for the Senegal international, 29, in January. (Calciomercato - in Italian)

Would he get away with being a bit too physical in the EPL and more importantly in our shirt, not sure he would tbh.

He is probably the best one out there, in terms of performance level right now, and obviously heā€™s a robust character, so the sense in which our central defense could be overpowered while VVD is out would be diminished.

Not long term (is anything in football?) but could easily give 4+ years of great service.

How much? If the money is too stupid, it wonā€™t happen.

Omar Colley. Ā£10.8M release clause. Itā€™s been at least 20/25 posts since Iā€™ve last mentioned his name. :upside_down_face: IMO Colley is the perfect solution for the short/medium term future. Sign him in Jan and give him 2.5 year deal.

Maybe discussed and I missed it, but Ibrahima Konate would be an actual 1:1 stand in for Big Virg. And a player to build with for the long term. I put this in the Champions League thread this week. Itā€™s not just simply my own opinion, writers worldwide have often said Konateā€™s all round game is most similar to our VVD.

EDIT: Iā€™m a very firm no on Ben White. Easily one of the 3 most overrated footballers in England. I donā€™t at all get or understand the artificially inflated price tag. He just isnā€™t very good at the PL level. Brighton can keep him and keep raising his price and can keep creating hilariously unjustified hype about him.
