The Unreliable Rumours Discussion Thread (Part 1)

Think we wanted one in the summer but we don’t tend to force the matter unless the perfect option is available to us. I think we must have thought something was going to be open last summer or this to let Lovren go but it didn’t make us desperate with three top class senior CBs, a DM who performs top class at CB and some promising youngsters. So not getting one over the line probably wasn’t seen as a catastrophy but now with some rotten injuries it almost certainly has jumped in order of priority. We will have a well thought out, fully planned out, list of options ready. We’ll know roughly what it will take to get it done. Think one of those options will shortly arrive.

Would be foolish not to bring our plans forward and acquire a CB in January now. We cannot rely on Phillips and Williams if we want to win trophies this season. We have been lucky to arrive at the position we currently find ourselves in and credit to the squad for that but we are entering the business end of the season now and the lack of experiance at Cb against the worlds top players in CL knock out games worries me. Even Fabs tbh. He’s done really well but put a youth team Cb next to him and I think he will be exposed.

IMO only VVD is genuinely of the class we need as 1st choice CB options. Matip and Gomez are both decent and would be ideal #3 options in a perfect world but neither are able to keep themselves fit enough.

If it was me I’d be looking for a new partner for VVD in our first choice pairing and use Matip and Gomez at 3 & 4 with Fabs covering for the inevitable injuries. Then come Summer I’d be looking at moving on some of these perennially injured players. With squads of 25 we cant afford to carry them. It just limits us too much when we have a few long term injuries to carry as well.

If news of Matip’s injury is as bad as rumoured, even I would be hard pressed to not push for a signing this January window, even if I had always liked Klopp’s style of not jumping into the market to solve every problem in the area of playing staff. But lets see what is the truth about the injury for Matip and I would not believe that Klopp and the entire team behind the scenes are not working hard on the different options, whether they are looking to buy or not.

I’d be very surprised if we only signed 1 CB. We could do with 3.

Yeah I think If Matip is long term that might change the picture, we probably just move some deal forward from the summer.

Personally I’m happy to give Nat Phillips a chance but we need someone in that position anyhow.

Its interesting that Klopp has tended to go for Williams rather than the older and more experienced Philips.
Nat did very well when called upon and hasn’t featured since. The selection for the Newcastle game will be very interesting.

Nat turns like an oil tanker. Neither is particularly quick but Phillips is a bit lumbering and if Williams is going to have to play CL games we might as well give him the league games too.

Phillips is not yet registered for the CL squad but he probably will be come February depending on what we do in the transfer market next month.

I think it is more he has used Williams in the C/L as Phillips wasn’t registered so couldn’t be used in Europe, but also when a more more agile and quicker defender is needed, but when expecting a more physical battle has opted for Phillips who might not be as big as Rhys, has matured physically a lot more so is less likely to be bullied physically.

Oh come on, be nice to the lad.

He turns like an aircraft carrier :stuck_out_tongue:

Williams is a bit more mobile than Nat but Nat is much more physical and very good in the air, maybe the Newcastle game might suit Nat.

As soon as Thiago is fit, I’m playing Hendo in defence.

IMO this would weaken both our midfield and our defensive unit simultaneously.

Williams appears to be a much more front foot defender. Very positive in trying to come forward in order to intercept and/or cut off passing lines so might be better suited against teams who play with a ten or false nine, or who try and play balls through the middle.

Phillips appears to be better suited at playing square, holding the line, so may be better suited against teams that try to create from wide areas with crosses into the middle.

You’d really play 2 midfielders in central defence? :flushed:

It strengthens CB over playing Nat or Rhys. I don’t think the midfield takes that much of a hit.

Allison
Trent Fabinho Hendo Robbo
Thiago
Gini Jones
Salah Firmino Mane

I would, even if we had fit defenders.

I very much doubt whether Thiago is ready to start a whole slew of games yet.
