The Unreliable Rumours Discussion Thread (Part 2)

Why is it disrepectful? What are you on about? You asked a question and you were given an answer to that question. Give yer head a wobble. All you’re doing is moving the goal posts.

It’s a bit like putting Mellor Potter Warnock Guthrie in with Gerrard.

I know the poor lads having a tough season but he deserves a bit more respect than that.

Not that Gomez or Harvey were products of the Liverpool academy but I’ll let him have it for arguments sake.

Nobody is saying Morton is on a par with TAA as a player etc.

When say a product of the academy, what age do you mean then?

What a strange take on youth progression… it’s like extremely rare at the big clubs…

To have Jones and Trent is really good, many more on their way as well.

Ramsey does deserve at least 90 minutes before he is written off

I think the picture is distorted because of the funds clubs like City and Chelsea have had available to buy up a lot of top talent in both first team and youth/academy level simultaneously which hasnt necessarily been the case for us.

How many first team players have City developed from their youth academy? How about Arsenal?

Top clubs often end up buying much of their first team from lesser clubs who have developed them.

When you’re competing at the very pinnacle of club football, you’ll be lucky if you can find a gem or two from your own youth academy who match the standards of what you can find in the market.

We have TAA. Bajcetic looks very promising. Kelleher looks like it could be a gem, but perhaps not for this club in the long run because he is blocked by Alisson. Jones has shown flashes, but he is on the periphery of the first team at the moment because of his injury record.

I personally don’t include Elliot, Carvalho, or Gomez because they were developed elsewhere before we signed them.

Are you including academy prospects that have on to be of success elsewhere? If so then you have;

City - Foden Sancho Sturridge Richards Trippier Icheanacho Brahim Diaz Eric Garcia + couple new ones that have come on the scene this season in Lewis and Palmer.

Arsenal - Saka Smith Rowe Nketiah Balogun Maitland Niles Willock Iwobi Musah Wilshire

Would you like Chelsea’s?

Why should I include them? Most of those players never made any impact at those clubs, and have been replaced by better players they’ve brought in from elsewhere.

That’s fair enough & yes there is truth behind that but the scouts did their job in help bringing those players up through their academy.

Most of the young graduates that come up through Liverpool are never to be seen or heard of again. Do you know what the likes of Sinclair Morgan Woodburn Wisdom Amoo Sama Adorjan Brannagan are doing these days?

Kristian Adorjan signed for us 14 years ago :joy:. David Amoo left in 2010! I don’t know what evidence you are looking for bringing up players who were signed, played and sold under completely different leadership at Academy level.

For academy graduates who are relevant at other clubs - Grabara is playing CL football at Copenhagen (and just pusted Mat Ryan who was regarded a decent PL keeper not long ago).

Liam Millar is a regular for Basel and a Canada international.

Yasser Larouci is a regular with Troyes in Ligue Un.

Pedro Chirivella starts for Nantes and has been a good player for them.

Allan is considered one of the best DMs in Brazil having been at Atletico Minerio for a number of years now.

Bobby Adekanye is playing every week in Holland and scored 5 goals with 4 assists this term.

We also aren’t a player factory like Chelsea and Man City. We have nowhere near the volume of youngsters at the club - nor do we spend anything like the sums of money they do on buying players for youth teams.

I’m not looking at anything I’m simply recalling from past times when I used to watch u18s and u21s games out of excitement what was to come then soon realised its actually a big waste of time because a lot of these academy players end up nowhere never to be heard of again.

Our record in bringing players through or them going on to have successful careers at a good level is dismal.

Adam Lewis
Dan Cleary?
Who was his u18 captain partner at the back? Tom something, later came out with the story he purposely wanted to injure him. Anyway who cares he’s no longer here.
Whatever happened to that Tony Gallagher chap we signed?
Has anyone heard about that colombian left back we signed? Is he still even at the club?
Bobby Duncan. Oh dear, a lot of huff and puff about nothing on this 1.
Ben Woodburn the next Michael Owen they said, people didnt want to believe he was league 1/championship standard….

And then you have the current crop like Beck Bradley Morton Koumetio Clark Clarkson and fans really think there’s hope for any of these guys to breakthrough? Living in cuckoo land.

Don’t forget the new Robbie Fowler, Lauri Dalla Valle. :joy:

But really, there must be a ton of such players/careers coming from other rival clubs also, it’s just how it is.

Few will ever merit a chance, fewer will merit a chance and be useful for a few years and even fewer will end up being something like Owen/Gerrard/Trent.

Once in a generation type players.

Could you imagine a prime Gerrard and Owen in this team. All a sudden you go from a team finishing 7-9th to a team finishing 4th.

But we’ve stopped searching for players like Sterling, a 15 year old bought in from QPR for a modest sum of 500k…12/18 months at youth level is all it took before he was deemed good enough. Did brilliantly well for the 3-4 years he was here and then brought in 50m for the club….wheres that gone?

@Sweeting don’t waste your time mate

We recently signed Kaide Gordon and Ben Doak, playing similar positions and with similar expectations as Sterling. Doak looks an incredible talent, as does Gordon.

I know I shouldn’t. I used to have to have these conversations all the time when I was on twitter. Some people just blindly ignore the realities of how difficult it is to predict the progression of a human being from 15 to 20 years old.

Wheres the Sterling money gone @Sweeting

Do you care where these guys are or are you just making a weird point? Genuine question - as I know exactly what all of these players are doing.

And yes, the Columbian lad is still at the club. He’s on loan at Alaves.

It’s just a weird point to try and say that Liverpool don’t sign anyone good or that we don’t develop and good players then just list a bunch of guys that no one really had very high expectations for (while vehemently ignoring the likes of Doak, Bajcetic and Gordon who have come with first team expectations).

Every club has an academy full of players who mostly won’t make it. For example this is the list of U21s let go by Chelsea in 2019/2020.

Victor Angban
Kasey Palmer
Daishawn Redan
Jay Dasilva
Tariq Lamptey
Clinton Mola
Brad Collins
Joseph Colley
Josimar Quintero
Fankaty Dabo
Martell Taylor-Crossdale
Ruben Sammut
Marcin Bulka
Kyle Scott
Kylian Hazard
Jared Thompson
Renedi Musampu
Rashawn Scott

Lamptey and Dasilva are playing in the PL - most people probably haven’t even heard of any of the others. This is the same every season for every club.

Well said Sweeting.

It’s an odd line of attack on the club, as we do have some good young players. That’s not where our current issues are though.

Ownership, midfield…

When those things are sorted, things will start to improve again.
