The Unreliable Rumours Discussion Thread (Part 2)

Yeah, some people like to think that outgoings are so much in our control. Who do we sell, when and for how much. Doesn’t work like that.

Very true but has any other club seen this many departures from one area of the field and all on Bosmans?

I get that we pay them well in the first place and perhaps then don’t want to pay them even more to extend their stay. But we also don’t seem willing to shift from our valuations for players, supplement their wages for a year or two to get them off the books to someone who’ll pay them less or actively encourage them to find new clubs. We just sit and wait it out. Whether that’s someone like Gini who was playing week in week out or Ox who we’ve barely seen for two years.

Also very true but does it not strike you as unlikely that we’d have had no suitors for any of these in the year or two running up to them leaving? We could find clubs willing to pay good money for Minamino, Lovren, Wilson, Williams and the like but no one was willing to take a punt on Ox or Keita last summer?

I get it, they’re both injury prone. And I guess we probably might have kept Can and/or Gini if we could have some to suitable deals for them but it just seems like a lot of midfield bodies leaving for nothing and we seem happy for them to be here until their deals expire.

Suitors, yes. Willing to offer what kind of money exactly? Players willing to go there? What about wages (structured here, but still)? All very vague or hard to know. It is how it is. There are mistakes in football on all levels, but fans also need to know that some things are not possible, or not so much in our control. Happy or not happy, the only thing I want from both sides while they’re together, is to be professional and get from each other as much as possible. Thank f*ck we have a head coach who doesn’t moan, is willing to reward if players merit and has the ability to make it work. Injuries are shit for everyone, nobody wishes them. It’s harder to move so many pieces every few windows when you’re at the top, especially outgoing. I know it’s frustrating to see some players here longer than we’d wish, but that’s up to us to learn and adapt.

i’ll give you this @rab I haven’t been tracking transfers all that long but our midfield definitely gets some wear/tear on the players while they’re here.

Gini’s the only one who really left for a higher payroll and he’s constantly fucked now.

Can dropped off at Juve, doing well at Dortmund I think now?

this current rash of Bosman’s are somewhat disappointing, especially Keita. We’re taking a HUGE wash on him between his fee and his wagers. Like he pretty much downed tools, maybe he had expectations of not having to work so hard.

Many if not all of the players who are now considered surplus and/or likely to leave for free in the summer have had suitors over the past few years. In all cases we have batted them away over valuation. It is an approach you can argue a justification for, but I think on net its hurt us on a variety of levels

There were reports how our valuation changed and still changes over Nat Phillips. But a lot of others, there weren’t reports like we were valuating this much or rejecting that much. And I do back the club that they can’t react wild like we can on forums and just say “ah, just accept any fee and move on”.

I think the difficulty of not being able to move on a player is overstated really. Obviously different factors come into play. If a team is successful as we have been, most players won’t want to leave. I bet Can wishes he’d stayed, as well as Gini.

Other teams manage it. You don’t have to freeze someone out. You can have a nice chat, explain things, like, sorry Ox, I don’t think they’ll be many chances for you next season. What do you wanna do?

I know it’d been talked about but this seems like confirmation from Pearce that Milner is moving on.

Be very sad to see him go and a shame not to see him move into the coaching set up. But he’d go with every thank you and best wishes possible. He’s been a cornerstone of this era and he’ll be a big miss around the squad for sure.

Isn’t he still here only because of the ability of our centre-backs to get injured just before the end of the transfer window?

Thanks for the honesty boss, but I really like it here. My family are settled and my kids are in school. I love the training and I think I can force my way into your plans.

What now?

I think it’s more because the offers aren’t arriving.

And at times, we decided we needed him as extra cover.

But the valuation has dropped with time.

Yes, you’re right. It’s impossible. A player has never moved on or been sold from any club. Sorry for even suggesting it could be done.

That’s not what I remember Jürgen saying, I remember him talking about how we pulled his most recent couple of transfers out because of the need for cover.

What you’re talking about probably matches closest with when he went out on loan instead of a permanent deal.

At times, near the end of the window, if there was an injury or two at CB, yes. I didn’t forget what we were asking for him, also when he got promoted with Bournemouth and we expected (or hoped) that they would come back in for him. Which of course Jurgen won’t say. Plus some interest abroad. Point remains, our price expectation just got lower and lower with time.

Jesus, what is it with your hostility?

I’m putting it to you that a player with a contract is under absolutely no obligation to leave the club. And as Klopp’s ethos is to build a happy and tightly knit squad, that does mean that in some cases players are less likely to want to leave once they are settled and enjoying Kirkby as a place of work.

If a player does not want to leave the way a manager usually deals with this is to freeze them out - put them in the reserves, make them train alone, that kind of thing. It is very rare that Klopp will do this. Players have said he will be straight and honest with players (and plenty do leave in search of regular football) but if they are at the club they are treated the same as everyone else.

What I think you are doing is deciding that you think it’s easy to move any player on who would rather stay, and then criticising Klopp and the club for not doing something you think is straightforward.

Fucking James Pearce the crafty wordsmith.

I think you’re missing what he’s saying. If a player doesn’t want to move because of everyday human factors, it can be very difficult to make them move without acting the prick. Which Klopp isn’t and treats people with respect. The only time I can recall he made a move outward happen was with Sakho, who let’s face it was being a dick.
